Geoscene Another way to look at it is how dedicated is the manufacturer to the model. The Wrangler is the "halo" model for the Jeep brand and you can't say that about the FJ and Toyota. You can actually build an entire Wrangler with aftermarket parts although it may not be a JK model. If you think really long term the Wrangler has the FJ beat hands down.

44Blues The FJ longevity, in general would be superior in my opinion....but I'd never buy one. The Jeep is simply more fun, easier to mod and has great resale. My JK has been reliable and offers top down fun. We drove the FJ....just not our thing.

TheDesertOutlaw At work on Friday afternoon, I put the top down, windows in the back, and drove home 10 min. later. Tonight (Sat. night), took the Mrs. out for dinner with the music cranked up. It wouldn't be the same if I was driving an FJ. Not by a mile!

i disagree! just because ONE model of anything survives a LONG time, doesn't mean all will! just how if a large numbers of one model last a long time, doesn't mean they all will. i think when you ask about reliability, you should look at things individually, because a lot of the parts/components that MAY have issues, MAY be parts you intend to upgrade down the road anyway! I for example could care less about beating a little harder on my suspension even though the car is almost brand new, because I know I want to do a lift kit and upgrade most of the suspension components anyway... there may be issues that come up with the stock suspension, but i'm hardly interested. also, when things break or wear down, it's a great opportunity to upgrade to something a lot better/funner for not a lot more coin, since clearly what you are asking of your vehicle to do, is more than what the factory originally intended...

at the end of the day, the FJ is ugly as sin and there is absolutely no way around it. you can't take the top off so it's a crappy summer vehicle. these two reasons alone should be reason enough! driving around in a fugly funless car just for the HOPE that it won't break down slightly as much is too big a compromise for me. it's 2012, all manufacturers have stepped up their games! you have a bigger chance of keeping a BMW 3-series constantly in the shop than a Wrangler, so i think you have nothing to worry about

highwayman Awhile back, watching a slightly modded FJ on 33s, spin, make multiple attempts, alot of drama and eventually his buddies stacking a lot of rocks just to make it up the bypass line up the waterfall of dishpan springs. I personally can't take the FJ seriously, when my buddy with a stock jk on stock 32s went up the same line with no effort the previous week.

On another note, those pics of the white FJ are quite funny. He really needs someone out to spot through that? What exactly is he spotting for? That rock on the driver side of the rig?

The three Toyotas were running Baja California trails for 1 week. Funny thing - I have run my Jeep along the same trails, and none of these problems presented themselves - after 9 years of ownership!

BakedInMN I traded my 2008 FJ for my 2012 JKU. If, as you stated in your original post, "offroad" = dirt roads, mud, snow, ice, etc. then the FJ is quite capable. It worked flawlessly for me for 4 years.

If you want to do more serious offroading, I'd go with the JK.

The pro's and con's of both vehicles have been beat to death here (with opinions slanted toward the Jeep, it's a Wrangler Forum, DUH). Take them both out for a spin and see which one you like better.

The blindspot issue with the FJ does go away the more you drive it (you adapt to it, and it's not as big an issue after awhile). That would be the biggest "test-drive" issue that may scare you away from it. But it just takes some getting used to.

At the end of the day it's your coin. Get the one that best fits what you are looking for, and are most comfortable with.

"Small nod to the off road part?" No offense, but if your picture is a sample of your "off road" then you have much to learn about Wrangler capability. A Prius could drive there.

My bad. The FJ had brake problems (Automatic) - the Tacoma broke its' swaybar (if that's a bad thing).

sdgmcdon Haven't read the entire thread so not sure if you bought yet or not, but IMO it would come down to convertible / doors off or possibly more reliable...

Toyotas are known to practically run forever BUT after being a Wrangler owner now for about two years, I would NEVER trade being able to have the top off, LOVE THAT. So far I've had no reliability issues other than a bad computer image from the factory that has long since been resolved (re-flashed, works fine - which IMHO could happen with any vehicle). But being that I haven't had a Wrangler for years and years and 10's of thousands of miles I can't speak to over all reliability though I suspect it's probably not that of a Toyota, but certainly not "lemon" material either.

I did have a 2000 Cherokee for quite a long time, bought it new and ran it to close to 100,000 miles and only issue I ever had was a faulty power window; which could happen on any car including a Toyota...so from that, I personally don't think Jeeps are unreliable.

When I bought my Wrangler I never even considered an FJ because they just didn't look to be as much fun as a Wrangler...Now after two summers top down the whole time and doors off a good portion of the time, frankly, I feel sorry for FJ owners.

Toyota is not perfect and the 22R engine is history. Look up the Toyota engine oil sludge problems of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Toyota blamed lazy owners and finally had to recant. Camry, Avalon, Sienna, Solara, Highlanders, Celica; Lexus models ES300 and RX 300 from 1997 to 2001 were the affected models.

Ask Toyota truck owners on forums about frame rust and collapsing tailgates. Those are well documented problems as well.

No vehicle is perfect and Toyota's engineering has slipped since the halcyon days of the 1980s.

Jeep-Forever Thats a pretty fair post Matt. I guess I was disappointed because I thought that the FJ top or doors could somehow be taken off but was told by the dealership they couldn't (not even a sunroof option). Unlike the Jeep, they also said you can't turn 4WD on the fly because it would damage the transmission (although I don't know if that is actually true.). I actually like the styling and comfort of the FJ, but if one is looking for the convertible option they'll have to look elsewhere.

County98 All things being equal (model year, mileage, etc.), both will be just fine. FJ gets a small nod to the on road part, JKU gets a small nod to the off road part.

Abdul-Hakeem FJ is the only new vehicle equal to JK Wrangler in soft sand, except maybe the 2 door nissan patrol which is very rare. It depends on the terrain you want to be on and the parts available in your nation.

Geoscene I think the "quality" gap has narrowed tremendously so that now it may be slightly detectable with statistics but to most casual observers it is now equal.

The FJ will not have nearly as many aftermarket options or configurations.

Just like the new Camaro, it looks "squashed" to me and it seems that many say the Camaro is cave like just as many have said about the FJ in this thread.

MattK I currently own an 07' FJ manual 6speed, which means full-time 4-wheel drive, and am here to research a Jeep solely for the topless option.

The FJ will be a fine choice for what you describe for its usage. It's a capable off-roader, they took a stock one on the Rubicon and it finished it.

Mine has a 3" Donahoe Racing lift, now known as Icon Vehicle Dynamics. Rock rails from Demello-Offroad, 33" Nitto Terra Grapplers and Wheelers steel black wheels. I wouldn't throw mine at the toughest of trails but I've been on John Bull up in Big Bear and played around locally in Anza Borrego/Ocotillo Wells. It has 75k on it and never needed anything other than the normal maintenance. The CV boots do need to be replaced here shortly but that's IFS for you at this mileage. I put on some of the sticky mirrors to eliminate the horrendous blind spot due to the C pillars.

Here's a quick list about the FJ, not a comparison to Jeeps.

PROS:
  1. It's IFS,(which makes the con list too), front end makes for a smoother ride on road and in some specific cases off-road as well. Washboard trails etc. where IFS shines. Let's face it most of us spend 90% of our time on roads and the FJ's IFS just fine there.
  2. It's a Toyota. It's dependable. I've never had to do anything but routine maintenance to my Toyotas and the dealerships have never bitched at me about modifications.
  3. It's got plenty of motor for the vehicle. Mine actually has less HP than the newer ones.
  4. I think it has a great look once it's lifted which is my take on Jeeps too. Otherwise it's a little wimpy looking.

CONS:
  1. As above it has IFS. In particular off-road situations it's not the best due to articulation. This would be rock crawling or extreme differences in level of the terrain you're going over. However being on three wheels can be fun for poser shots! Or if you like the soothing sensation of being in a rocking chair on three wheels as you let he IFS settle down before moving on!
  2. You have blind spots due to the C pillars.
  3. If you are going to put it in some rocks you'll want to replace the rear trailing arms as they will bend if you put a big enough rock down the inside of a tire. I can't say how the JKs do in this dept.
  4. The front body mounts stick out into the wheel well so for tire clearance reasons you may want to have that chopped and redone at the end. Any off-road Toyota specialist will do this.
  5. Windows! You can't roll down the rear glass and the quarter windows don't even pop out like maybe on a extra cab truck to get some extra air moving in there. With just the two front windows going down it turns into a massive wind tunnel and actually can be painful on my left ear when driving.

Other than this it's like most any other off-road production vehicle. You will need to make modifications to suit your needs/wants. If you want a vehicle you can take the top off don't bother with an FJ, period.

I'm not going to get into a big fight over what's better, I'm just giving you my perspective as a 6 year owner of an FJ Cruiser - and you can't get much older than a 6 year owner since that's when they came out! If you want to talk with me more please PM me and I'd be happy to share more with you!

You make the call! I'm here doing what you're doing except I already own an FJ and have loved it for 6 years. I want a topless vehicle though and so I will end up with a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon at some point! Just put all of it into perspective with your needs and you'll come out on top no matter what choice you make.


EDIT: Just wanted to share a picture of it since you're into doing the same things I am like National Parks and stuff. This is up in Sequoia National Park headed back down the road from Morro Rock for a sunset photo session I did.

I've also noticed that I rarely see the FJ on the trails. I went to a local off road festival last month (Big Bear Forest Fest). I was looking forward to wheeling with people that drive vehicles other than Jeeps so I could check them out. Sure enough, there wasn't even ONE Toyota in my group of 27. There was even a Ford F250, a Suzuki Samarai. Not one Toyota. Out of around 250+ wheelers, it was around 95% Jeeps. All the vendors were selling Jeep stuff, etc.

Jeep-Forever I've driven both the 2012 Jeep Wrangler and the Toyota FJ Cruiser. I must say I was very disappointed in the FJ. While it was comfortable in both the front and the rear (and offered ample trunk space). This vehicle was NOT fun to drive. It drove like a minivan, not so great handling, and I really felt boxed in the vehicle. Not to mention its horrendous blind spot, poor rear visibility, and unusually loud in the cabin. There is no sunroof option, no way to take off the top and certainly no way to take off the doors or the windshield. There is also a lack of options, so you can forget about leather seats, navigation and other amenities the new Jeep's have. I'm actually one who doesn't mind the unique styling, and tend to prefer Japanese vehicles, but I will steer clear from this one.

It's important to note that the FJ Cruiser hasn't been selling well for Toyota as of late. According to sales numbers, this year they have only sold about 10,000 FJ's. The Jeep on the other hand has sold over 150,000. This is more than a 10:1 ratio in favor of the Jeeps. Toyota has a history of discontinuing vehicles when they have such low sales numbers and the FJ is no exception (not only its among their worst MPG SUV in their lineup). Furthermore I've been very disappointed in Toyota's quality and dealerships lately. The last couple of times I've been there (all different locations) I felt the sales people to be snobbish, borderline rude and unyielding. As far as reliability and resale value, I believe the Jeep wins on resale, and the reliability is close to even. Jeep offers a full 100,000/ 5 Year warranty which is not only better than Toyota, but is going to cover the major parts for most of the time you own the Jeep.
Also the basic Wrangler Sport starts at 22k and the Toyota is upper 20s. I'll recently rented the '12 Wrangler Sport for a weekend in San Francisco with the roof down and had a blast with it on the beach and off-road. GF thought it was easy to drive too. Vote is for Jeep!

That's a fact! I got so frustrated trying to buy a reasonably priced 10 year old TJ that I finally bought a brand new 2012 stripped down JK for a few bucks more.
