I thought that stud would work with that antenna, it won't? I believe I will have make the hole larger in the mount for the stud to fit. I have a lot of coax and pl-259 connectors left from when I put my j-pole antenna on my house.

For now I'll be connecting it to my handheld Baofeng UV-5RE until I eventually purchase a radio to mount in my Jeep

I'm missing something.....you didn't show any coax and it doesn't look like that antenna will mount in to a 3/8 stud screw base. Did you leave out part of the plan?

TJ_John I've mounted my Little Tarheel II on the tailgate of my TJ using a Diamond K400. I didn't get very good performance mainly due to not bonding the body and frame well. I've since moved it to my LOD Signature tire carrier, but haven't bonded it or hooked it up due to time constraints.

In the interest of keeping the Tarheel safe, I bought a fold over mount from Breedlove Mounts. If I take off the whip and fold down the mast, the whole antenna is safe from branches, etc.

ukfan1976 Nice to see Hams on this forum! I've been licensed since 1995 and recently picked up my General back in the spring. I've noticed most of this string has suggestions mainly for VHF/UHF, but have any of you successfully (and tastefully) mounted an HF mobile antenna? I mainly dabble in the 20m-40m bands and know there are mobile mounts out there, but obviously getting adequate groundplane would be essential. I have a mobile VHF/UHF/HF rig (Yaesu FT-857D) and honestly have no idea how to go about getting a good looking install for the head unit in my brand new 2015 JKU Sport without messing up the dash. Defintely have got some good ideas tho Any HF'ers out there??

Thanks for this post! I just ordered my brake light antenna mount and was trying to choose an antenna, glad I found this thread! I'm going to order that antenna and use my Baofeng UV5RE for now until I can buy a new more permanent vehicle mounted radio.

Thanks a lot for the idea, got a SBB2 too and attached it with a mild steel bracked home made style too.

Reception/transmission is good, nobody can see it from the outside and/or break it, and it's protected from the elements (salt in winter here in Canada).

PhotoWrangler I went with the Diamond K400S and a Jetstream dual band 40". Took it to Dallas last weekend and hit a repeater 59 miles away using a 5w Baofeng HT. Just hooked up an FT2800M today.

Terrible receive and usually high SWR due to no ground plane at all.

Read up a few posts of mine using a Larsen NMO mount and a trunk lip on the back gate.

Interesting. Do you have any pics of how you're mounted? Can you still use the door?

No one makes that type of mount for the JK.

There is another solution on Ebay which uses the 3rd brake light. Good if you are using an NMO type base mount and antenna is shorter not hitting branches. It isn't a solution for me, so I am still working on other solutions. PM me if you want the link for this item.

Wow, 4 days have passed and no replies. I guess chances are slim for a solution to the rear taillight mounting on the JK model Wrangler, that earlier Wranglers enjoyed using the TeraFlex brackets.

Just got my first Jeep Wrangler. 2013 Freedom Edition. Love it!

Great thread too, thank you to everyone that has contributed.

My issue and question is, I was hoping to place 2 NMO mount antennas, 1 on each of the Tail Lights. Problem is, I see no one is making anything like the TeraFlex solution for the JK models.

I have the stock cages around my real tail lights, from the Jeep factory.

Has anyone here run across individuals or a company making/fabricating these from scratch and selling them to the willing? Anyone have experience or luck with the TeraFlex 1912001 & 1912002 being modified to fit, if possible?

I'm not keen on the hood or cowl mount and keying up 50 watts of RF on VHF or UHF into me or my passenger. The spare tire mount isn't a great location for an NMO antenna. The Cooltech Ultramount license plate solution, for that price and I am not even sure if it is modifiable for NMO (I researched, but didn't stumble on it), is an option but one of the last ones.

Many newer radios have a setting where you can set the radio to turn off automatically after a certain length of time. That way if you forget to turn it off it will do it for you. My Yaesu is set for 30 minutes. It beeps for a few seconds to warn you it's about to "Auto Off" then you can press any button to reset the timer.

Landman Thanks for the info on the ham test. Out of curiousity, I took a few of the practice tests online. In my line of work I've been around commercial radios some and know a little bit about radios (probably just enough to be dangerous!) but I actually passed a couple of the exams without studying yet. So I think I'm just going to read the book and then study the question pool.

One thing you might want to keep in mind when you wire your radio directly to the battery is that you want to make sure the radio is off when you start your vehicle. I had an installation tech at a local commercial radio company tell me that the power surge when you start the vehicle is bad for the radio. I don't know if that is true but it certainly makes sense. My commercial radio is wired directly to the battery but is located where I can see the face so I know whether it is off or on. I also have Anderson Power Poles on it so I can easily remove it. However, I usually just throw a towel over it when I get out of the vehicle to prevent it from being so visible to thieves.

Anderson Power Poles are great. I like to use them on all my vehicles and radios along with an NMO antenna mount. If I want to I can easily switch out my commercial radio for a CB. Here is a link to the Power Poles and a link to a good NMO CB antenna. The antenna is a Tram 1140 and can probably be found cheaper somewhere but I just posted that auction link so you can see a picture of it.

Zed I was actually thinking of wiring mine like I did my off road lights. Straight to the battery with a rocker switch on my APod in the cabin. That way I can leave the radio on under the seat, just cover the face plate when I get out (I work in the city and the druggies will smash and grab anything shiny) and just flip power on and off from the rocker.
