rrich He He - Obviously your experience is much different than mine, or should I say "ours."
I have the receipts for mine to show how short they last.
Sledgehammer -- I think it was on one of the Hammers that I killed a sidewall on an MTR. I live right down the street from the Hammers in Landers, about 12 miles away.

I remember plainly once I had on new BFG AT's on my Tracker going across the lake and one self destructed.

That's a good playground now, while it lasts. Looks like we may lose it though.

Nope, not at all... all five MT/Rs I replaced had plenty of tread left, they weren't even close to being worn smooth. I never wait that long either, I value my life too much. I hang with guys who pretty much all run MT/Rs and I've never heard of anyone getting the low mileage you claimed to have gotten out of yours. With two sets of MT/Rs under my belt that see plenty of sharp rocks, and get just the usual care (balancing and rotations every 5K miles), I have a hard time believing anyone who takes the usual minimal care of their MT/Rs would get anywhere even close to the low mileage on them you claimed. There are just too many of us locals running them out in the local deserts getting good mileage out of them. I've cut one competely through the sidewall on Sledgehammer in Johnson Valley but that's it.

rrich Maybe I replace them much earlier than you. I replace them when the tread is low, not down to smooth or the cords. I've only ripped apart 2 MTR's. Considering their usage, that's great.

I give the used ones to kids building their first rigs.

Either you're not taking reasonable care of your MT/Rs or the stars and the moon are in alignment to get you. I got over 40K out of my first set of 35" MT/Rs and my second set of 35" MT/Rs have well over 25K miles on them and there's still plenty of tread left on them. I do nothing unusual to care for mine other than the bare basics due any tire like keeping them balanced and rotated every 5K miles.

The tires that get the big mileages have hard rubber, not much good in the rocks where you need "grip."

I love my MTR's, but they suck in the mud. Mileage is short, only 15-20k. But in the rocks they can't be beat! Hard to hurt one too.

In about 55,000 miles, I've gone through 3 sets -- $$$$!

slippy iv been wheelin alot since i made this post. my roomates with lockers and MT's really enlightend me. we did some tests and this is what iv seen.
without his lockers our jeeps were comparible. there was no major diffrence in MUD prowess besides that MT's will not slide as much thru the mud. we were on a very tilted trail with mud and i kept sliding down. hes MT's would keep grip much better.
with his lockers he could plow thru some pretty wild mudholes. without them on he would get stuck just like me.

iv asked around aswell, and the opinion around here is lockers first unless your getting some sort of serious bogger tires.

could someone explain to me what a limited slip is? worth buying?
lockers vs limited slip?
is it like a locker but in standerd 4wheel-High, instead of 4wheel-low?

Jerry Bransford So long as it's a very tough trail with lots of uneven areas, I'll take any Jeep further with lockers and street tires than I could with the gnarliest offroad tires and no locker. The only time more aggressive tires will win out over lockers is if the trail is gentle with no uneven surfaces so all four tires can remain in contact, or perhaps in deep mud or deep snow.

nicolas-eric first buy some MTs.

after i installed 2 ARB airlockers with my BFG ATs i was very disappointed. the ATs were too bad to drive to places where a locker would be needed. with the MTs there was a big difference.

GrnTJ Lock it up before the tires. Your going to get a much more noticeable difference from that than tires imo.

Sb5551 I put the Dunlap Mud Rovers on my Jeep and I love them. According to the reviews on Tire Rack, they last a long time if taken care of properly. They are amazing in the mud, too.

Then again, nothing beats the feeling of driving home from the shop the first time with my detroit in the rear. This thing is unstoppable.

rketr Agreed...locker.

I don't do mud, but noticed a HUGE difference on the rocks when I put in the front locker (already had the rear).

Try Destination M/T's

Take a look at Firestone Destination M/T's - Get an alignment when you install them and then rotate every 5 to 8K and these should last 40 - 45K without a problem. Great in the Mud!

tj1230 If it were me I would get locked first.

If you plan to go the other way, BFG KM2 is coming out with all the right sizes in september. *(including 33x12.5x15)
My BFG M/T's KM1 went 40k and still looked brand new! Yeah I agree, I rotate mine every 2-3k.

Just a thought!

ChrisTX I'd say get lockers first.

I like BFG MTs for a strictly mud tire. I've never had my MTZs in mud, but I'd suggest just using them in mud. The traction is good, but they don't hold up well in the rocks.

solo97tj rotate them every oil change i have MTZ's and they rock on and off road so far and for mud they are great

m/t's or lockers?

now that my roomate has a rubicon unlimited im rethinking what i should get next for my jeep. hes rubicon is awsome in the mud. front and rear lockers and some basic bfg m/t's really push thru some crazy mud.

my jeep right now has 33 pro comp all terrians, and the dpg ultiment kit. its pretty weak in the mud. im wondering what would get me further on a muddy washed out trail...front lockers, or mud terrians?

as far as lockers go im getting the super 30 with an arb locker. iv read a million debates about lockers,axles etc and im set on this.

mud terrians im open to opinions. i like aggresive tread, loud on the street doesnt bother me. but this is my DD so i want a mud tire that can withstand high milage. how many miles can i get out of a m/t? and i should rotate them every 3,000 miles right?
some of the tires that catch my eye are, the super swamper line, dick cepek crusher, mickthompson mtz.
