slf41002 It is a fact I have read at least 6 deff web sites stateing the same thing.Trim 2.5"s off the filler neck and now you go from a 15 gallon tank to a 19 gallon tank. The tanks are the same but the filler neck goes into the tank deeper so the gas starts comeing out of the neck before the tank is full. Here are 2 of the links I have.I will look for the others. Got Trail? Rob's (AKA seRob) Jeep site
Jeep Wrangler 20-Gallon Gas Tank Conversion

Ok correction I said filler neck but it is the vent tube that goes into the tank deeper causeing the gas to come up and out into the filler neck before the tank is really full.

Honestly no idea, perhaps so they can charge you extra for choosing the "bigger tank"?.. i donno.. its simple to fix though.. the filler pipe goes into the tank further down.. all you have to do is drop the tank, remove the pump and inside you will feel the pipe Cut it off at the top and you will have a 19 gallon tank.

If you're interested search around, there were detailed explanations on how to do it..

rrich Triple - why would Jeep put a tank in that only fills 1/2 way?

It doesn't seem logical - but some things don't.

jdhallissey That is what I did. When I bought it last week I filled it up with 15 gallons. Drove it 164.4 miles before it was on E tonite. So i figured I ran it to about 1 gallon left. I put 40 dollars in it tonite- and it was full then drove it 18 miles and it was at 3/4 of a tank. IF it keeps getting this kind of mileage a big block or something is going in it. Atleast I will know why my little tonka toy is drinking like a russian.

Triple88a Oh you must have the tiny fuel tank.. the funny part is jeep used the same tank, they just made it in a certain way so it only fills up halfway and stops like its full. They offered the jeeps with 2 different size tanks (same size tanks just one fills up halfway) If you want you can cut off a part so you can have the full tank.. search around the forum for more info...

Anyhow a good way to measure your mpg is set the pump so it fills up automatically, once it clicks, dont try to top it off, once it clicks, thats it.. anyhow zero out your odometer, drivewhatever you gotta drive and when your gas starts getting on E, fill it up and then take the # on ur odometer and then devide it by whatever you fill up as its said on your receipt.

example.. (these numbers are made up).. it says 186 on your odometer and you filled up 11.253 gallons...

186/11.253=16.53 mpg..
08-25-2008 11:10 PM
jdhallissey well I went 164.4 miles til it was on the E- but the funny part was I put 10 gallons in it and it was full. Then drove it 18 miles home and it was at 3/4 of a tank. I am stumped. My 12 second car got better gas mileage then this thing!

I thought these things have a 15 gallon fuel tank?
08-25-2008 11:00 PM
Triple88a what did you calculate? Just to make sure your math is all correct. Next, measure distance on your odometer and compare it to another vehicle to see if you have a corrected speedometer gear.
08-25-2008 10:56 PM
jdhallissey I just got done with my first tank of gas in the 97 and well I got 10.76 mpg. I need help with this thing. 4 banger 5 speed and I was driving is soft- ie shifting before 2k along with not even really speeding in the thing. It pissed me off tonite. HELP
08-25-2008 10:43 PM
Triple88a i get ~17.5-18.5mpg (corrected) in city with some traffic and some 60-70mph peaks (whatever the traffic is going)

I got stock 3.73 gears, 00 4.0L 5 speed with custom intake, custom exhaust, bored out throttle body, 6" of lift and 35x12.5 tires.

i ran 33's with 4.88 in my grand cherokee. tell you what i could get out of anything, and i had a 4.0L. i just think i could run the 35 or 37 with the same 4.88 and be fine!

juspimpin I was averaging 15-16 with 33s and 3.73 (6spd), then I went to 35s and mileage improved. First tank with 35s (and new speedo gear) was most miles on a tank. Due to habits, new tires lowered rpms while not increasing resistance enough I guess. Our habits are the same and we average about 1-2additional mpg with the larger tires. I was not happy with the 3.73 and 33. It was geared too high for me. I could start out in 2d gear with the 33s. Now, I think it is perfect

tazmann910 You better get packed and get on the road...

They clear just perfectly with the current bump stoping. It flex's great too. I have wroked it a little here and I know one thing for sure, I LOVE long arms.

By the way, the trip is going to be 500 miles for me slf41002. Its an 8 hour drive...

debruins 4.0L 5speed 35's with 3.73's i get 12-15 around town 18-19 highway and it evens out to usually about 16-17 mpg on average (im also 17 and drive fast so im guessing if you tried hard you could get a lot better and even better if you regeared!)
08-20-2008 11:28 AM
4Jeepn 5spd 4.0L with 35's and 4.56's and 1 ton axles I got 12-14mpg at best.

slf41002 Hey Grn how many miles is it for you tomorrow?I got 209-236 depending on the roads I take.I can go through a few more small towns and take a few bit curvier roads and cut 25 miles of the trip but it will add about 40 minutes or I can stick to mainly interstate and main roads and get there faster but more miles????I think half the fun of a trip is getting there so I say the county roads? What do you guys say.Anyway I will use GPS to get there if I get lost first(its like asking directions I have to be really lost to use it)but I will also use it to check my mileage at fill up cause the Jeep is full right now and I have been getting right at 14 MPG the last tank of gas that is,around 13 the last few tanks before that. That is about half town/city driving and half highway.I drove 159 miles at 11.3 gallons and 90 miles of that were highway and the rest was city driving and mall crawling My GPS said 159 miles and I think the jeep speedo was off by 18 miles.
08-20-2008 03:16 AM
GrnTJ Actually, that has been corrected with the proper speedo gear as well. Nothing is off, I tink Im just lucky for once!
08-20-2008 02:57 AM
idwin my guess is your speedo is way off
