|rebelBullDawg325||all we did was pull the head and take it to a machine shop so the could hot tank it and check it for warping and cracks. they called us the next day and said it was cracked and wasnt repairable. so i'm not sure where or how bad it cracked|
|08-22-2008 12:41 PM|
|whitebuffalo||how bad and where did it crack. i had a 360 with hairline cracks between the valve seats on #7 and #8 repaired and it never missed a lick.|

I'd say at minimum, he needs to drive you around till you get it resolved.
Have you pulled the data out of the "black box" yet?

Will that be cash you take from your brother or just part of his rear-end?
That blows dude..
|08-21-2008 09:45 PM|
|rebelBullDawg325||spring seems fine. but got word back from the machinist today. head is cracked and no good. so the search begins for a new one.|
|08-21-2008 08:20 AM|
I think you summed it up: Your brother borrowed your ride. Last time my brother borrowed my '72 Mustang he came back with a couple of bent pushrods racing our neighbor.
What your brother isn't telling you is that he was racing your truck down some freeway at sustained high speed and high revs. Which is more than plausible it created overheating and bent the pushrod.
High revs alone will bend pushrods. I have about half a dozen of them laying around my shop of examples of "what not to do" when you decide to race someone. Adding a rev limited cured that problem.
I'm surprised the valve stuck open. The valve spring ususally sets it back down assuming the keeper stayed on. I'm unfamiliar with the vortec motor but is it an interference valve train?
Is your valve spring broke too? That would be a sure sign the motor was over tached.

time to deck the heads and bump the compression.
Of course... piston slap is a bitch already.
|08-20-2008 10:14 PM|
|rebelBullDawg325||i've spent nothing yet clifford.... will pay the machine shop tomorrow when i get the head back from being checked and will buy the push rod and new gasket set at the same place.|
|08-20-2008 06:16 PM|
|MR.CLIFFORD||you are all wrong. I looked at 2 pictures and said.... you just spent 1200 bucks.|

|AzTJ||Valve stuck open, smacked piston and bent the push-rod.|
|08-20-2008 05:59 PM|
|whitebuffalo||i redid the top end of a vortec 350 with basically the same thing. the valve in #3 kissed the piston pretty good. there was chingoes of sludge and buildup in the engine from neglect (company truck), so i figured some crud came loose and found its way between the valve and valve seat, making it go boom.|
|08-20-2008 05:33 PM|
So it looks like this was the best guess...
Except for that overheating thing.
|08-20-2008 04:40 PM|
|rebelBullDawg325||hahaha. this is what happened. exhaust valve on #3 cyl stuck bc the eninge overheated somehow, my brother was driving and did get it shut down pretty quick. valve stuck open, allowing play in the rocker arm. as the puch rod was moving the rocker arm (with no resistance on the other end due to stuck valve) the rocker arm unset itself allowing the push rod to fall out of it. the hydrolic lifter then slammed the rod into the bottom of the head or something bending it like it was. the piston did smack the valve. the head is in the machine shop right now and we can see no damage to the lifter itself. these freakin vortec engines have the worst coolant issues ever. we're not sure why the engine overheated to start with, looking into that now.|
|08-20-2008 01:40 PM|
I'm going to take a stab at it....
...it's a Chevy?
|08-20-2008 11:56 AM|
I bet you have a nice hole on the inside of the cylinder wall to go along with those pictures too.... unless you shut it down quick.
I say you over tached it (causing the bent pushrod) and a perhaps dropped a valve in the process.

|jeffsjk||broke timing chain or stretched it and jumped timing.|
|08-20-2008 07:37 AM|
It's a chevy...they all do that!!! HA HA HA!!!!
Dropped a valve into the piston.....SMASH, Boom, Pow...

|JCS05Rubi||You are the first person in the world to blow up a chevy 5.7L 350?|
|08-20-2008 01:51 AM|
Hydrolic lifter stuck and rammed the pushrod so hard it bent and threw the exhaust valve into the piston.
Either that or the cam snapped in two and the piston caught the valve on the upstroke.

|yjwrangler||you found a coin like that in the engine of your suburban?? thats awesome.. whats up with the little metal tooth pic thats pretty weird too..|

|08-19-2008 10:38 PM|
i'll show two pictures and lets see who can guess what happened
just for starters, the pictures are froma 99'suburban w/ a 5.7L vortec
