skeejunkee resale is lower on a stick, sorry I know you all love the manual but the numbers don't lie. Xtreme 4x4 almost always puts in an auto!

PastorSteve All things are possible. Just not probable. You'ld do better with re-gearing than re-transmissioning.

cgoeschel Kind of technical first post, but I bought my 2008 Rubicon used with 5K miles and the deal was too good to pass up. Is is possible to convert it to a 6 speed and ditch the auto with cost not being the deciding factor? If so, I think Im going to do it.

PastorSteve The six speed is great from here. I think you'll appreciate the response from the ability to choose your shift points when you want the higher rpm's, as well as controlling your MPG by lower rpm shifts. It's the best of both worlds.

4X4RDSTR Got an auto and it's fine, especially in the traffic I encounter daily.
Makes my life easier when I take it on the commute.
If I want to shift, I take the Porsche, because that is what 6 spds do best.

Hilldweller I really don't like the way it shifts but it is working properly, at least.
What's the typical lifespan of the autotrans? Do regular flush/fills prolong it?

Have a 6-speed and love it

I have a 6-speed and it's great. I live in the hill country, so I have to keep the RPM's up to avoid bogging on the hills. My wife doesn't like to drive it because she isn't comfortable with the stick shift. It basically cuts us down to one car that we both can drive, which isn't good. Other than that, the only downside is that it's hard to drive around town while eating, using a phone, putting on nail polish...

If you want the 6-speed, I say go for it!

staleyjeep I have the 6 six speed and wouldn't have it any other way! Most def makes it more fun to drive and don't have the loosing power problem I have read about with the automatics.

Tray Is the jeep yours or is it your wife's? Obviously she knows how to drive a 6 speed if she occasionally drives it, so why get something you won't totally love and are comfortable with. Not trying to open that can of worms either, but that is what my husband would say.

Hilldweller I had to get an auto so that my wife could drive it; every day I die a little inside....
It would be different if it were a good automatic, like in the Vee-Dubs, Lexus, Mini Cooper, BMW, etc. 6 speed, sequential clutchless shift sort of thing.
But it isn't like that at all. It's just fine in the mud/dirt/rocks and uphill on the streets. But going downhill or in the twisties, it has you praying for more gears and engine braking.
One word: substandard.

6 Speed or Auto

I know I'm opening a can of worms here, but here's my delimma. I'm a little old school, and like a clutch. (I love my T-90 in my CJ2A) But......you guessed it....my wife will drive it occasionally and is more comfortable with the auto. I'm not into a whole lot of rock climbing, just Wyoming snow and mountain mud and ruts. I have my heart set on a Rubi, but it seems like getting one with an auto transmission defeats the Jeep experience. I'm not knocking auto trans fans, just willing to learn.
