rrich That's an expensive experiment, you'll see when you order it.

Why not try to determine WHERE the noise is coming from before throwing parts at it? For free?

Use a 3' hunk of heater hose - or garden hose. Put your ear against one end, point the other end at the places that may be making the noise. You'll hear it plainly when you point it at the noise source.

I'm surprised nobody else mentioned it before.

chrsr3089 i think im going to put a new ac compressor in it and see if that does it. where is the best place to buy one?

chrsr3089 ya i just replaced the tensioner to. and i have a decent amount of knowledge about jeeps at least for an 18 year old. it might not seem like it with all these dumb questions ive asked lol.

ccain Actually there are two pulleys to check... The tensioner and the Idler

Not trying to be a dick here, but I'm not sure of your technical level so... DON'T check them while the motor is running!

Loosen the tensioner and take the belt out of the way. check for looseness and overall slop. They should not make noise when turned and should spin freely without a feeling of roughness when they are turned by hand. When new, they spin freely when you turn them but do not continue to spin when you let them go.

But I really don't think this is your problem, but it never hurts to check em anyway, especially if the Jeep has any miles on it.

chrsr3089 clutch fan, water pump and alternator are new and the oil pressure is steady. where is the idler pulley?

If it were the oil pump, and it made that much noise the oil pressure would fluctuate. Is the oil pressure steady?

Other things to check out are the fan clutch, water pump, alternator and idler pulley... Although those would probably make a constant sound.

HAHAHA! I thought about it but... come on, idol - idle isn't as abused as the other!

ccain Is it under the hood? If so, do you have Air Conditioning? If so it may be the compressor clutch cycling. It's normal and does this to keep the internals of the compressor lubricated and free from seizing. If it's making more noise than usual you may want to look at it as the bearings go bad from time to time.
