Wh33lin Didn't do the amp yet. Maybe in the next yr once the other upgrades (newer lift, fender, etc) are done. But I did update the article with poly-fil info. Made a big difference in the sound and for less than $10.

Derp To the op, Read this article for a better understanding on DB and rms/watt power.

Theoretically 90% of the time you listen to your sound system at 1 watt. (It is hard to grasp this concept). The only time your 850 watt amp will have a full effect is when the power required has doubled to gain a noticeable increase in volume (DB). 2X the power output = +3 dB increase, 10X the power output = +10 dB increase, or twice as loud. So, what is the benefit of more power output?

To further understand the above please see this article.

Hopefully this will benefit everyone .

The lesson is you don't need tons of power to be loud. A well thought out and designed sound system will be crystal clear and be plenty loud. Use common sense.

12s suck. 10's are the way to go. Another lesson here is that a well designed speaker will out do any over sized or over powered poorly made and designed speaker

Some of the best audio equipment around is made by companies people write off as junk. Just because its not kicker doesn't mean it can't kick.

blueskiesbill Decided against the 4x6 plate since the speaker would be floating, and just bought a 4 1/2 inch kicker and replaced the factory speaker in the little factory box enclosure thing. I will eventually investigate how to replace the one inch done tweeter on the top but I may just move that up to the dash. My .02.

Oh and 6 1/2" kickers in the sound bar too that rock

Jerry Bransford Just be wary on what speakers you buy for your TJ if you don't also install an aux amp. For just a head unit without an aux amplifier, make sure the speaker you choose has no less than a 90 dB Sensitivity. Less than 90 dB Sensitivity, like down in the mid-low 80 dB sensitivity, and you would need a higher power amplifier. 90 dB or higher Sensitivity and just a head unit will have enough power to drive it to an adequate listening level.

One more thing to be aware of... a speaker's wattage rating is normally just how much power it can handle without distortion, not how loudly it will play on your head unit. A 50 watt speaker with a 91 dB Sensitivity rating will play louder and more cleanly than a 500 watt speaker with an 84 dB Sensitivity rating will on a standard head unit.

TJ Speaker Upgrade from Stock Speakers

Hey all, I consolidated some info for doing a speaker upgrade in a TJ, specifically my 2003 Wrangler. Mainly it was because info was all over the place. Hopefully this makes it easier for those that decide to do it on their own.
