All jeep wranglers 2007 and after do require a data interface module to be installed on the new radio's harness. In the Jeeps, it doesn't have much to do with airbags, more with turning the radio on and off. In 2007, Jeep added a data system to the wrangler, and many convenience features are controlled with a single data wire. Your radio is no exception, and the factory harness does not have a traditional 12 volt ignition wire, it's turned on with the data wire. Aftermarket radio's cannot "understand" the data wire, so the module converts the data wire into a traditional 12v ignition wire to turn the new radio on and off. Many of these modules also provide quick connectors to easily install steering wheel control modules and will sometimes provide extra wires for installing video/navigation radios as well.
For 2007 and up wranglers without the Infinity sound system, use the Axxess module XSVI-6522-NAV, and if you have the Infinity sound system, get the CHTO-013. Either of these can be purchased at a Best Buy or local car audio shop; the XSVI will set you back about $80, while the CHTO is about $130.
You *can* install a radio without these harnesses by running a new 12v ignition wire from your cigarette lighter socket or fuse box, however you may throw check engine or airbag lights because the data system no longer sees the radio installed. Any reputable installation shop would not give this option; it is essentially "rigging it up"

alot of these new vehicles run air bags, parts of computer through factory radio so you normaly need a $$$$ interface to keep everything working and install aftermarket radio. Jeep etc started it w/ in last 4-5 years but GM has been doing it since 2000. it sucks i get to tell alot of people the bad news but it's the way the idiots are makin these cars....

2009 Jeep wrangler unlimited sahara, factory radio replacement
I have just purchased a Jvc Kw-avx720 video deck..... I am being told I need to get a pac wiring harness before I can install.....Something to do with the air bags..... Does anyone know is this is true... Reading up on the pac wiring harness it just seems to have control to future expansion?? I can't seem to find it at crutchfields.... I am being told this holds true with any aftermarket radio install on these Jeeps.... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Once again this is a 2009 Jeep wrangler unlimited sahara....
