Ibuildembig In reality a 10.25 is arguably stronger than a 14 bolt. I have seen those break with 42s and minimal v8 power.

Depending on what the op is using for tires and terrain will also make a difference. I am running 4.10s on a 36 but I will more than make up for it with horsepower.

You will need a minimum of a 4 inch spring and SOA to run a 38 unless u want to cut your jeep up. That being said your going to need a Sye with big fixed yokes. When changing axles there's not really a SOA kit you can buy, it's all custom.

cd84 Okay thanks guys I appreciate the input. Yea I have been looking around for 1 ton axles but I wasn't 100% sure on what gear ratio to go with. I do plan on getting more serious with my wheeling but like you guys said I don't want to do something that is just going to break when I go out.

Yep, I know that. I have seen many Fords running 44's on 10.25s....But we are supposed to be giving advice for the RIGHT way of doing it, not what will work, or just getting by.

Just a heads up, but stock 10.25s can handle up to 44's no problem.

0III0forlife As far as what ratio in the axle with a 4.0 and 38's? I would run 5.13's if you can get them. the 4.0 is going to groan and not want to go, even with 4.88's.

0III0forlife If you havent swapped your axles yet...Dont plan on running the stock drivetrain on 38's very far.

The stock axles will handle 33's if you are easy on the skinny pedal.

If you upgrade the rear axle to a Ford 8.8 or a 10.25...you can run 35's...

If you want to ride tall on 37's or larger, you need some 1 ton axles under it. Go over to the builders corner and go thru Ibuildembig's build on his Golden Eagle Wrangler....Those are the axles that you need for 38's...Dana 60 1 ton 8 bolt axles.

Its a nice idea to make your YJ big and bad, with a spring over and some tall tires, But unless you plan on building it and then letting it sit in the front yard for show, i dont see where it would be worth it.

You can do what you want, but the guys like myself, that are giving you advice, have many years of experience...34 here. And i have broke almost everything there is to break on a Jeep...lol.

Xpress At minimum I would personally be looking at 4.88.

I assume that since you're going SOA and with such large tires that you have already lined up much sturdier axles, so I'm not going to question it.

I don't know the specifics of your build, but please tell me you plan on swapping in different axles? As for gear ratios, 4.10 is going to be a dog with 38's, you really need to step up to 4.56/4.88/5.13 ratios.

SOA Gear question

Well I'm getting ready to finally do my SOA and got a few final questions. First off I'm going to be running 38" tires and need to know will 4:10's with the 4.0L turn them alright? Also I'm wanting to know who sells the best SOA kit out there? I don't necessarily want to break the bank but I do want quality. I know there are tons of threads on here for this stuff
But I just sort of want specifics so bare with me , thanks a Ton.
