I bought mine last week, and it looks the same shade of red as your before picture. as soon as the weather clears up, it will be time to soap it down and wax it up

mike22 If you find that your exhaust manifold is cracked they are very easy to weld up even though it is made of cast if you need to know how just pm me!

0III0forlife The 89 2.5L has throttle body injection on it, so the pump is in the tank.

If you are switching from a steel tank to a poly tank, you will have to get a new sending unit/pump for the poly tank, since the steel tank has a round locking ring on it, and the poly tank has a square ring that is bolted down to the tank.

I would address the gas leak as the priority, then do the brake job.

As far as the exhaust leak, if its up at the manifold, its most likely a cracked manifold(common). The bad, is that its made of cast, welding it is useless, so a new one is in order for that.

Welcome to the Forum, and to the Jeep world. Good luck with your future endeavors, and we will always be here to help if we can.

cozeinlb The fuel pump, pick-up and sending unit are all one piece inside the tank. It is a couple hundred ($200+/-) to replace the whole unit. They are also known to break off. Mine is apparently broken so car stalls on turns under 1/2 tank.

meyerc89yj Thanks all. Yes, the pics are before and after wax. It was a pretty hasty job because it was getting dark and the mosquitos where biting. I will do another round later this week.

Probably a good idea on the fuel tank leak being fixed first. I'm watching craigs and ebay for a good deal on a PVC fuel tank.

I have a question for everyone. If I am going through the hassle of pulling the tank off (the skid plate bolts are pretty much solid rust and will need to be cut off, what else makes sense to replace? Fuel pump? Sending unit? All of the above? It has about 156,000 miles on the 2.5L engine (original), so I'm thinking that it probably makes sense to spend the money and time to replace everything.

I'm also not sure if this has the pump in the tank or outside. I haven't checked or looked it up, but I know that if it is outside you can get inside the tank pumps. I think that would make sense from the stand point of pushing rather than pulling fuel and the added protection/cooling of being in the tank. Thoughts?

Of course, maybe it is already in there :-)

1970Buick looks like brand new aftermarket seats in it as well. Probably $400-500 spent on those. Nice looking paint too!

Glenn91YJ Welcome aboard.
I'd take care of the fuel leak ASAP!
That's a nice looking Jeep...would hate to see it go up!
Then brakes.

Hello,

I've just purchased a 1989 Jeep YJ for be my project for the next several years. I've been reading through the forums for the last few weeks while I've been searching for the perfect Jeep.

I'm sure this forum will be as useful a tool as my hammer and screwdriver as we take on this project!

Here's what I've got:

Basics:
1989 YJ
2.5L
5spd
Hard Top (already off)
Sport Roll bar

The Good:
She's mine!
Almost no body rust. California Jeep until 2005 or so
Runs and Drives!
Newer seats

The bad:
Gas Tank leaks, no more then 5 gallons at a fillup
Brakes pretty much shot (drums in back need total overhaul)
Exhaust manifold cracked, so it sounds rough
5th gear is a little loud, but works
Small stock rims/tires

My first "project" was a wash and wax, and the wax did wonders to the jeep. She shined right up and looks 100x better.

Here are a few pics. I'm not sure what is next, probably the brakes since they are a safety issue, followed by the fuel leak and then exhaust. I plan to do some budget minded repairs that will allow this jeep to make it another year or two as is before we start the major job of a complete rebuild.

I look forwad to learning from all of you as we start this project!
