I don't know who said it but I like this one also....

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions, the deal is done.
I picked up the new JK this afternoon and turned in the soft top as agreed on in negotiations. I didn't really consider keeping it because he factored in getting the top with my TJ when we agreed on the price and I gave him my word on it. To me, integrity is more important than a few hundred lousy bucks.
Hauled it down there on my HitchHauler, still couldn't get it inside the TJ because it was rolled up around the frame with a cover snapped over it just like it came from the factory. I can't remember how I got it out when I bought the TJ, it was in there and I didn't pull the hard top.
The owner seemed real glad to get the soft top and laid it up in a back room of the office area before I left. It had never been unrolled and the side windows were still in the original MoPar box.
Sure like the new JK, sweet.
PS: I'll need to change my avatar now.

|slf41002||Well I just read post #9 and in that case yes the top should be with the Jeep.I would just slide it up to the front seat and lay the hardware rods in the passenger seat and the other end of the rods in the cargo area.It will fit in the jeep with the hard top on.I bought a hard top for mine about 300 miles away and had to remove my soft top and lay it in the jeep then put the hard top on afterward.|

|slf41002||To all the salesmen out there arguing how bad it would be for him to keep the top.The only way it would be bad for him to keep it is if he has already agreed to throw it in other wise the top is still his.Once the dealer gets the Jeep if the top isn't all done up nice and neat the way it came from the factory then it will be pulled out anyway and do you really thing the dealer is going to give it to the buyer of this Jeep??? No they will not,the hard top is the top they will get and the only top they will get.|

Sounds to me like Hitchhiker is above that kind of thinking.

I have been selling cars for over 20 years and every time and I do mean EVERY TIME I ever sold a car, truck or JEEP; My customers knew what they were buying and knew what they were paying.
And Dealer's do know when they are missing tops and third seats to trades.
Stand by your word... You would expect the dealer to.
|09-05-2008 03:16 PM|
They'll remember you said you'd bring it. I know I would and if my customer didn't show up with it we'd either add a few hundred bucks to the final cost of his new JK or I'd hound the hell out of him till he brought it to me. Probably even send him to get it before we finished all his paperwork.
You should follow through on your word. We all know what we think of people who don't.

I doubt they have a check off list when you drop it off for trade. If by chance they remember or do have it written down, tell them you forgot to put it in. Maybe they won't care. If they do, just bring it back by.

Your word has to be worth more to you than a few bucks.
It is not herd to put the soft top inside the hard top on the Jeep.

|Jma20a||im not saying to stick it to the dealer. im just saying that you would get more money out of selling the top than giving it to the dealer, and you can take that money and spent it on the jk you are getting.|

|Jma20a||i'm with Neil F. sell it on ebay. just tell the dealer a friend needed a top so you gave it to him. or make up another excuse. that way you can make a few bucks.|

Thanks to all of you for the help and suggestions.
I mentioned the top to the owner of the dealership when negotiating the deal and he gave me a deal accordingly, so the ethical thing to do would be to turn it in with the Jeep. It's brand new, never been on the Jeep. I think I'll just haul it on my HitchHauler.

|Neil F.||Perfect condition top, sell it for 400! Don't give it to the dealer.|

|tough_jeep89||if the top is not part of the deal keep it just like what darton said. i am on the other end of the car business im the clean up boy. and if someone found a top that wasnt bolted down it would be gone|

Just so you know...
The Dual Top only fits correctly if you flip the canvas inside-out before you roll it around the framing. and then roll it up tight around the frame bars before you lay it inside the storage area.
When you flip the canvas inside out you have to undo all the Velcro fasteners flipping inside-out causes the to frame supports to be the same length so it will fit again.
I've done it a lot of time when we would add Hard Tops to TJs and people had to take both tops home in the Jeep.
Either that or I stayed at a Holiday Express last night so my game is really on right now.
CONGRATS ON THE NEW JK!

|Darton||Anyone wanna know how I got my factory tinted window panels for my Jeep??|
|09-04-2008 09:02 PM|
|Darton||Being a car salesman i'll let you in on a little secret. When you drop off your Jeep they will take it back to the clean-up bay (even if it's already clean) where the employees will strip it of anything not bolted down and some things that are. Then the clean-up kid will wash it inside and out. and it will then get put out on the lot or be ready to send to auction. Before they put it on the lot they will take anything out of it that thieves (not the salesmen cause they already got the things they wanted) could possiably take from it at night when no one is around. Take my advice, wad up the top and and stuff it into the passenger seat then hand it over to the salesman so he dosen't have to fight the thing to get it out of the jeep later. Or don't even take it in unless you've already promised it with the Jeep then you could sell it on Ebay. :o)|

How to Put Top Inside?
I made a deal with the Jeep dealer to trade in my TJ in for a new JK, supposed to pick it up tomorrow afternoon. I'm getting the Sahara Unlimited 4 doors with a hard top. Has limited slip, towing pkg, and an automatic so my wife can drive it occasionally. Steel Blue Metallic with gray inside and a black top.
I have the original soft top for my TJ, never put it on. It was inside the Jeep all rolled up when I bought it, took it out and stored in the basement, now I can't figure out how to get it back inside the Jeep so I can take it to the dealer. I tried for 45 minutes, finally gave up.
Anyone know how it goes back inside without pulling the hard top off?
