kwn306 I had the same thing happen, one of the bolts above the tail pipe snapped. I undid the hanger for the tail pipe and got up there with a cordless dill and drilled it out, tried the easy out method, that didn't work, figured out what drill bit was the correct size for retapping the hole and ran it through. Took a tap and lots of Sea Foam spray lube and retapped the hole, replaced the bolt and life has been good ever since.

Jeembro Oh and how high you can raise it, well I had mine like 4 or so inches up when I was working on grinding the rear shock bolts off.

Unscrew the gas tank filler hose from the body (don't want to crack anything if you raise it high enough). This is only 4 screws. Also, unbolt the fan shroud from body. Then you should be good to go raising it a few inches

SupremeTeam I'm took the bolts lout yesterday and I'm gonna lift the body tomorrow I'm just wondering if anything needs to be disconnected from in order for me to lift the body up a few inches. I m wondering how many inches I can lift it also.

DNKC Just saw the bump on this thread. I was able to get the nut off by doing the tub lift. Though it wasn't just a few wacks of a hammer. It was still quite a deal, the nuts were welded on both sides on mine, but we finally got it. I dont think we would have ever got it off without lifting the tub. Hope it works out for you!

Rubicondon53 Thankfully I already had a 1" body lift installed, which gave me enough room to see the nuts, get a small cut off wheel up through the center hole and just cut them off. And that 1" was enough room to get a wrench in there and install stainless hardware, bolt down. Took me about 45 minutes including the time to sip a brew and figure it out.. Just a different way to accomplish the same goal... If you don't have the airtools, then getting the tub up higher and wailing on them with hammer and chisel is the other way to go... Good luck

I did not. There was a rubber grommet covering an oblong hole in the floor from the factory that I was able to use.

Lucky for you, there was no way in hell a chisel and hammer were going to knock my bolts off. Grinder was the only thing that worked for me

SinfulDragon For what its worth, I broke 1 bolt changing my rear shocks, and didn't need to jack up the tub in order to get it out.
Pulled the inner fender well back, slipped a chisel in there, few whacks with a hammer and it was out.
Threading a new bolt in from the top was a bit of a pain, but getting a wrench on top of it to hold it was a non issue due to a cut out in the back of the Jeep under the carpet.... actually, wonder if I could have gotten the chisel to it from there and saved even more work?

TnDz TJ Watch for electrical harnesses, vent tubes and filler tube if you are going to lift it up that high..... Hate to see you rip a harness in half...

Try to get it up high enough for an angle grinder or impact chisel.... That is the route I will be taking.

SupremeTeam How did lifting the body work out for you? I have all four bolts broken and I was going to weld on some grade 8 bolts facing down and mout the shocks by just screwing the nut on. But if the body comes up easy enough in the back then I might just do it back the factory way.

Wattapunk I would treat it just like a body lift. undo the side you are working on then slowly jack up the body just enough room to get up there. I don't think just unbolting the rear bolts will lift the body and will put too much stress on the tub when lifting. Unbolting both sides may make the tub shift and make reinstall a PITA. Not sure you will have enough room for a hammer drill though.

DNKC Thanks for the info, that was exactly what I was looking for, picture and all. My next question is do all the bolts need to come out to lift the rear enough to air hammer the nuts off? I thought I remember reading that only the back end bolts were removed for others who have gone through this? (I feel like I need to be extra careful moving forward with this to keep from messing something else up, my luck hasn't exactly been great so far)

MrCrunchy I don't have a picture of them, but they are the same bolts you remove to do a body lift. There are 11 total. You might want to do a youtube search for body lifts. I believe someone suggested to only loosen the front middle to help keep things lined up.

pmtg It's like installing a body lift but without actually lifting it. Just look up any body lift manufacturer's instructions. Here's the PDF for Rough Country's lift: http://roughcountry.com/install/1157.pdf. As you jack up the body it will raise a fair amount before it actually separates from the stock pucks.

I went through the same battle. Spent a lot of time trying to drill one broken bolt out. The next two broken bolts were resolved with a 3 pound hammer and a punch...fit the punch against the broken bolt and hammer up in the same direction as the bolt originally was installed. It took quite a few swings but it went. Raising the body helped give access to the new nut that went on to secure the new shock hardware.

Hey guys, I've searched and came up with the solution I need, just no real info of how to accomplish it..

So yesterday I tackled swapping out the shocks on my new to me '03 Rubicon. Was a real pain in the butt. What should of taken me couple hours took all afternoon and evening.

In the process I ran into the what I now know is a common problem. One of the rear upper shock mount bolts sheared off in the nut thats welded into the top side of the frame. With some help we finally got it drilled through but it's crooked and no where near optimal but it was enough to get me back on the road. (this had already happened on one of the bolts on the passenger side at some point in its history)

So after researching this I've found it happens all the time, and the best fix is to unbolt the rear of the tub from the frame and lift the tub up giving access from the top of the frame to knock the nuts off and replace with good hardware.

My problem is I saw this procedure mentioned multiple times, but no more details on the process itself. Does anyone have any pictures of how they did this? What bolts do I undo to lift the tub? Other problems or concerns to watch for when doing this?? Any help would be appreciated!
