mrbigjeep yeah i was gonna recommend that. it helps a lot. a visual is the best way. that is how i figured it out. its best to see it. glad ya found it

tiny terror I found another thread with a picture. I'm good now. I'm visual.
10-28-2006 12:22 AM
mrbigjeep lol its really hard to explain. i posted a thread about it a while back and didn't get it at all when someone posted the answer but then when i was lookin at the wheels it finally clicked while i was thinkin about it and i understood.
10-28-2006 12:12 AM
tiny terror Uh....... boy, I feel stupider each time I open this thread..... kidding.

Thanks much, I'll get it, I have to see it as well as read it.

mrbigjeep if the tire is too wide and is to close to the body it will hit the control arms because the tire is too wide and therefore too close to the control arms.

think of backspacing this way: if you turn the wheel back side facing up (where you can't see the side you see when they are mounted) it is the distance from the round circle part in the middle (where it mounts) to the edge or lip or end of the wheel. kind of confusing but you'll get it eventually. i didn't really get it until i was just messin around with the wheels i had stacked up in my storage room (waitin to be put on) and then it clicked and i got it :light bulb: hub mounting pad is where it mounts and the distance from that to the outside is backspacing! if the mounting pad is further in then that means the left side of the wheel is further out when mounted which means it sticks out more and has less backspacing

wow i hope i didn't confuse you even more
10-27-2006 11:59 PM
tiny terror Awww god, I thought I had tires all figured out and now I'm confused again with the rubbing of arms and backspacing. Dang it.

mrbigjeep yup...rubicon wheels and tires are the most expensive!! new rubicon wheels are $250 a piece!!!

i think you could have them powdercoated in black...i'm sending you a PM that should help
10-25-2006 12:44 PM
RedWrangX yeah i am shopping around some but wheels and tires are damn expensive! the second most expensive mod i would like to make to my tj. i saw a few sets o frubi wheels on ebay but they had some scratches on them and had like 20 bids. hey you think i could take a set of ruby wheels and have the redone? like have them powdercoated or something in black? would a body shop be the one to do something like that?
10-25-2006 12:29 PM
mrbigjeep lol ya...yeah you can run it without rubbing. BUT it will stick out about an inch which is why the rubicons flares are an inch wider. i run 32's currently with no lift and don't rub at all on the street or in the mud...but i do have to admit that when im flexin it out in a ditch or somethin that the tires are crammed in there....no big deal though really.
if i were you i would get some rubicon wheels if i could. i just love the way they look. i don't know if they are necessarily "mean" but i really like how they look. if i had a rubi and i was puttin bigger tires on i would just keep the rubi wheels and get bigger tires. i think thats when they look best. when they have 33's or bigger mounted on them. then again the steelies look good too and i am happy with them. shop around some on ebay and other places and im sure you can find a rubi wheel/tire set/combo for a good deal. should be able to find it for about $800 which is good and they already have 31's on them if its off a rubicon
10-25-2006 11:49 AM
RedWrangX well you know what i "mean" lol, i was using it as an adjective like phat. lol so i could very well run a 16x8 rubicon wheel with a 16 inch 31x10.5 with no rubbing or obnoxious sticking out. so i guess my next question is how much bigger than a 31 could i go without lifting?
10-25-2006 11:25 AM
mrbigjeep rubicon wheels are 16x8. i've heard lots about the baja claw radials and a couple of guys on here run those tires.
the soft 8 is a good wheel. you can run a 31x10.50 on a rubicon wheel without rubbing if you want to...that is what comes stock on rubicons anyway...i don't know about rubicon wheels looking "meaner" though. i think they look really really good but i wouldn't use "meaner" to describe it
10-25-2006 10:44 AM
RedWrangX i might go with some super swampers, i found some really nice ones made for highway as well, they are supposed to be quieter than most tire and they are about 100 bucks a peice which isnt bad. its between those or MT baja claw radials. also, what size rims are the ones for rubicons? my search for a wheel that would allow me to put my 31x10.5 tires has pretty much lead me to the suggested soft 8 wheel. but i am wondering if the rubicon wheel will allow me to use that tire and without rubbing? because they just look so much meaner. so any info on wether or not those would work for me?

They are new...VERY aggressive tread pattern. Blackwall with a pattern in it. They are sold at Tirerack if you want to check their specs.

I really like the BF's and I hear people get some pretty amazing mileage out of them but I think I'm gonna pick up the Kumho Road Venture MT's or the KL71's MUCH cheaper and seem to get pretty good all around ratings themselves. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Okay, so i think I'm going to go with 15x10 Soft 397's with 4in backspacing. Any suggestions for tires brand/size based on experience?

I'm going to get 5 of these to put on my 4cyl in black. If I go with 31X10.5 tires what size of these would I go with? What size back spacing would I need.
10-15-2006 09:56 PM
mrbigjeep that aint too bad...is there a discount tire near you...i know they sell the black wheels there and they can hook ya up with some 31's
10-15-2006 09:14 PM
