DUDE! I just finished both doors in under an hour with this write up. Probably like 45min as I took it easy and also lubed up all linkage and lock linkage with penetrating oil. Lots of funk in there after all these years. Well I finally got rid of the horrid chrome handles and both doors are in working order; my fiancé will love being able to actually open the passenger door from the outside! (Found the threaded linkage which attached to the opening clip mechanism inside to be disconnected)
All I have to say is I've done a lot of things with assistance from Forum write ups but this wins the Gold medal! You sir deserve a lot of beers my friend. To anyone on the fence about doing this yourself, you can easily do this with this write up, VERY THOROUGH!!!
I just wish the owner before me read these so he wouldn't have cracked both door panels that so easily slides out versus trying to yank it out. Taking the glass out is a cinch and makes for quick work!

I agree 100%. I did this...this weekend....I used this tutorial to take my door handles out repaint them and then reinstall them....they now look new for the cost of a $4.00 can of spray paint. Thanks again!!!

OK. Some of you guys are going to cringe, others have probably seen this done before on other vehicles for various repairs.
The handle and lock worked fine, but the return spring that tightens up the outer lever broke. Letting the lever rattle constantly. I didn't care that it was loose, but the rattle was driving me nuts.
I took the broken spring off opened up one coil, and put it back in.
The hole trick I picked up at a repair shop years ago. A mechanic was trying to get to some exhast bolts, so he cut a wrench hole in the floorpan.
I did this on a 94 T-bird, replacing an upper control arm. It saved me from removing an entire wire harness, ABS unit and air contitioning. It's a standard door knob saw. It makes a hole just big enough for your wrench or plyer.
There is a rubber welch plug available that size if I cared enough to finish it off nice.
Also, that "Jesus clip" is removable by wedging open the crank and panel, then putting a hook in a large opened paper clip. Hook the clip from the closed end and gently pull it out. It won't pop and fly away(I already lost one).
Total time less than a half hour.

With the help of this post I was able to pull my old rusty door handles, sand them boys down and spray with some bed liner. Look better than new IMO.
The entire lower half of this used to be rust.

|krisbman||Better yet, dont shut the door at all, use a screwjabber to operate the latch and see if everything works. Little tricks like this save a comission tech alot of time and time = $$$|

Door won't open
I had the same problem as others after installing new outside handles. The new handles did not have the external spring my old handles had. The door would not open when I pulled on the outside handle. It looked and felt like the handle was only moving the mechanism about half the distance needed. I popped out the threaded connector rod from its clip and moved it from ten threads from the bottom of the clip to about two. I sprayed everything with WD-40 and the door handle now worked perfectly. One other tip, after installing the new handle, leave the door panel off, make sure the window is up, and close the door to test the handle the first time. If it doesn't open from the outside, simply climb in through the other door and open the stuck door using the inside handle. If that doesn't work, reach inside the door panel and grab the threaded connector rod and open the door by moving the rod. That will prevent having to take off the inside door panel with the door closed. After getting the door open, make the adjustment to the threaded rod I mentioned above.

|Bigkidneys||After installing my new outer handles yesterday my door also got stuck between the lock and unlock and wouldn't open. Luckily was able to remove the panel inside and yes, it was a tight fit and like Cedar just said, adjusted the tension on the threaded bar by taking the clip off and lifted up on the rod and it opened. Just put the clip back on so it wasn't as tight and easy to bind, sprayed silicone lubricant on the whole inside mechanism and its good as new and 10x easier to open, lock, and unlock.|

|rjames||Great post on installing the outer door paddles! I have just removed mine to paint my YJ and the retaining clips for the "keepers" were rusty so naturally the broke. I need to order new clips and I cannot find them anywhere! All I can find are the keepers and they do not include the clips. If someone has a part number or a link to order them at PLEASE POST!! I NEED HELP!!|

Just installed my "crappy chrome" door handles today. (The driver's side only) It was a total bear. Not because your instructions aren't good. They are excellent, but I guess I only half read them.
I will try to do the passenger side tomorrow.

On my Omix Ada ones...1 of the 2 broke within minutes of installing. The other one is still working great with no issues at all. Even still looks pretty new.
My Crown Automotive one still works good but the finish is wearing off and it looks awful faded.

I am shopping for handles now for my 2000 TJ. *I wish there were good ones for a $25 each price but am doubtful.*
Has anyone had their replacement handles long enough to see if they are worth a damn?
Amazon.com has Crown and Omix-Ada. *Based on reviews here, I'm going with Omix. We'll see how they are.*

|Drock1979||Yea I just put factory plastic back on. I ended up removing glass cause I had to pull clips so hard I was afraid I would hit and break the glass. I also had to modify replacement handle to have enuf room to rotate to engage door mechanism. Must say it was worth it. Door handle works like a dream now.|

The hole is a great idea. Just remember to cover it with plastic before putting the door panel back on so rain doesn't get in. Did you grind down the clamp pins a little like I did? Makes it a lot easier to slide them in place with the window still in since the gap is so small between the glass and the door. After I grinded mine down a little, they slid in with no problem using just needle nose pliers.
I understand that removing the window is not that difficult, but after doing these little mod's one time, changing the handles in the future will be quick and easy if they ever break again in the future.
And I feel your pain with the crappy replacement door handles not working. I did extensive work on mine to get them to function right.

|Drock1979||I didn't, it's an ugly cut but I will try to take one tomorrow and throw it up here. After further working on it. It's really not needed but I figure it's worth it for future access. Made it much easier to get those clamp pins removed. If you look at the pic of inside door with interior panel removed at beginning of thread I just cut out the rectangle depression just below window opening prob 2"x5" sized indent u see in ops pic.|

|Drock1979||Cant believe the price the stealership wanted. $133 each door handle and to do install was $230 per door, Qtec had the door handles for $21 each. I am hoping the quality holds up and have not gotten the handles yet just took off doors and preped them for the handles. Hopefully it will go smoothly.|
