yjwrangler i am the guy jpdocdave is talking about in the swap,so i am the guy who swapped in the engine. the hardest part is wiring...but anyway, why put in a 4.0 just pick up a 3/4 or 1 ton drive line for nothing and do something creative, your better off and alot more likey to get a more professional looking job with something else, also you will attract more attention from other jeep enthusiast. there are alot of people on here who know a whole lot just ask for the parts, go to junkyards, go diesel, put in something big, why waist money on a 4.0 and ax15 and another np231. go big!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mknight759 ok my point was to me more power is better i like to have it and not need it then to want it and not be able to get it but then again cost would be an issue also he may be able to get a complete package 4.0 or a v8 from something wrecked that would probably play a big factor in it fuel milage you may get better with the v8 the 4.0 is not known for its economy purposes
09-21-2008 05:00 PM
jpdocdave i was assuming we were talking about the 304, 401 was pretty rare.
09-21-2008 01:27 PM
mknight759 it was a mildly modified 401 way more horsepower than 4.0 it would outrun mustan gt in 1/4 grant you i did not build it i had bought it previous owner had did all the work but the point is extra power is nice when you want it and while a 4.0 is adequate a v8 would be a better option imo
09-21-2008 08:52 AM
jpdocdave first of all the v 8 in a cj had less horsepower and torque than the 4.0. secondly i don't put in a v8 cuz i like to keep my jeep a jeep.

and its not worth putting in a carbed v8, so by the time you get a fuel injected v8 to work, it would be harder and more expensive than the 4.0 imo. and most states have emissions testing, a v8 isn't gonna pass in most states, i know in illinois it won't cuz you can't make the obd 2 system work right for their regulations. you could do it but it would be expensive. factory wiring, computers and sensors will make the 4.0 work and pass emissions.
09-20-2008 11:31 PM
mknight759 i would go with the v8 for all the trouble the i6 is a little underpowered anyway i had a cj with the v8 like it better than the 05 i have now with the i6 but its a personal preference

JuggaloShawn i appreciate all ur guys input and i would deffinatly do a swap from my 4 to a 6 not buy another jeep wit a 6cyl lol...but is it worth the work for the added hp ? or for the amount of work ill be doing should i mines well just put a small 8cyl in?
09-15-2008 10:07 AM
slf41002 I did make a mistake on an earlier post to this thread as I stated to get a few thing at a time.Well that is ok as long as you buy the engine, wiring harness and computer all matching from the same car at the same time. The rest can be picked up one at a time like, the tranny, larger radiator, then adapters and mount kits then what ever else you will need will fall in at the end.

dweebster well not to put any one in a slump or anything but, I just turned 24 my father passed away in 2002 from cancer and i finally gettin my life straight have a BA in marketing-sales minor in entrepreneur and spanish and 1 more semester for my BA in Advertising. And with all that said my dream car was a jeep when every body else want beamers, lexuses and the stupid rice burners i was the odd ball i wanted a jeep cause my dad loved the jeep. We actually bought a 1971 FJ40 but never finished actually am selling it now but i will never let anyone touch the JEEP cause i worked my ass off to get it and when i got hit by a drunk driver and they were going to total it i hired a lawyer to get it back and rebuilt it all by my self watching videos and asking crap load of questions on this forum so for anyone to say that a jeeps is not worth it then the person is not a jeeper. I say jeep is one of those universal rides and you make it the way you want. yea it might cost more than other alternatives but it makes you, YOU so shit i say if you want a 6 then be like nike just do it! dont go and buy different one!!!

h8nagn I am in the process of switching over from the 2.5L to a GM small block V8. There is a lot of stuff to make the conversion happen. It is looking like it will end up being between $1500 to $2000 to make the swap. Once I get everything together I will start a picture thread with details on the steps.

Actually the company they used sells it as a product, theirs was just the first. Comes as a kit with all the parts needed like mounts and such, you just have to supply the engine on back. It's on their web site.
I will agree though, I bet it is not cheap. I think the mentioned $10K including the engine and shipping from the recycler they bought it from but it did come with a warranty IIRC.

richp That 4x4 show on spike did a hemi into a TJ with emissions. Straight swap to one of the new hemi's, kit had wiring harness, ecu and motor mounts which made it plug an play.

jdhallissey I would personally due v-8 swap and I am thinking about it now in the jeep for next summer. i have had the 4 banger in there for less then a month and well she runs strong but her bark is worse then her bite. Little hills and well I can feel her start to get scared. So I am grabbing parts here and there and then when I have them all it will be a weekend thing for me.
09-14-2008 10:43 AM
jpdocdave ^i know what you're saying. i would never sell my jeep. but if the question is whats' cheaper, easier and makes more sense. without knowing his mods, the answer is sell the jeep and buy the one with the right motor.

now how many jeep people care about what makes sense? not me! i would swap in what i want cuz i build my jeeps, not buy them.
09-14-2008 10:27 AM
slf41002 Well in most cases I would not disagree with the people on here. This case I do!!!Not about the 4.0L being a gas hog or a bad swap idea.I do disagree about the selling of your Jeep to get one with a 4.0L . I have the 4.0 but if it blew tomorrow I would not sell my Jeep.Number 1 if you are like me and most other Jeepers you have way more money in your current Jeep than you could ever get out of it with lifts, accessories and mods. Then once you do loss your rear on the sell of the current one then the price of good used or new ones, then the lift, accessories and mods to the new one.NO NO NO If the 4banger is still running just pick up a few parts at a time from the larger radiator then the wiring then the tranny then all the adapters needed, then find a good V8.pull the front clip of the Jeep and go to town on it.
09-14-2008 09:36 AM
jpdocdave most people do it cuz they're attached to their current jeep, as they should be. but it's always easier and cheaper to go the other way.
09-14-2008 08:53 AM
4Jeepn As stated it very well may save you a time, energy and money by selling your jeep and getting one with the 4.OL in it already. Do the math and see what will work best for you.
09-14-2008 08:43 AM
jpdocdave i love the 4.0 and almost everyone that has it does. if you wan to keep your jeep, jeep i like that swap. it isn't easy, motor mounts have to be moved. cut and weld. if you want more power out of it you can build a stroker fairly easy also.

but it is much easier to sell, and buy a 4.o jeep. here's a link to a thread with this swap in a yj. its pretty funny

09-14-2008 08:25 AM
mknight759 look into a small v8 swap the 4.0 is underpowered at highway speeds and suuuuuucks on fuel some people claim to get 17 mine is almost stock i only get 13-14
09-14-2008 06:20 AM
richp Engine, tranny, wiring harness, ECU, easier to trade it for a 4.0L TJ than do the conversion, it's not something you will do in a weekend.
