Are you talking about a pre-purchase inspection or a state safety inspection? There is no way that should have gotten past a pre-purchase inspection. A state safety inspection probably doesn't even have a requirement that they be checked. That's usually lights, horn, wipers, exhaust etc. Even when it is required that they be checked, the method is at the discretion of the inspector. Most will accept the fact that you drove it in for inspection without wrecking it as proof that they are OK. It isn't worth it for a tech to spend a bunch of time on them. When we had state inspections they took about half an hour to do and cost $5. The state got $3, the tech got $1 and the shop got $1 which the cost of the sticker and annual licensing had to come out of. The happiest day I remember working in the shop was the day the state dumped the inspection program.
FWIW, a brand new tie rod end will fail the test if properly manipulated. I agree with whoever said take it to a pro to have it looked at.

|kjeeper10||Tie rods ends are stupid simple and cheap to replace.|

tie rod ends bad but passed inspection?
I recently bought an 08 jk(just over a week ago) and apparently the tie rod ends are bad. Talking my brother he said is shouldnt have passed inspection (inspc sticker is 7/13) if they are bad. Now not being jeep savy yet is that something thats checked during inspection and can cause it to fail?
