dodenhoff Did you do the swap? I have a 2003 5 speed TJ and want an auto trans so the wife can enjoy the Jeep.

Contra i love my auto

it is exactly like they say, makes offroading easier
especially up steep hills and such

nicolas-eric Yor right. The only BIG disadvantage of the 3spd auto tranny is that it doesn´t like water. It has a breather hole somwhere where the tranny is connected to the engine.

With the 5spd manual tranny you don´t have a torque converter. The TJ will be more sluggish with the big 33s than with the auto tranny.

Giancarlo i learned how to drive stick when i was 15 down the shore with the top down and doors off in a tj.. so when i turned 17 i bought an auto tj.. i love drivin my jeep around when its stripped down to nothing but i miss shifting gears using both feet... my jeep only has to conquer small trails and mudd and occassioal 3 to 4 feet water jeep will never be put against those mountains i have seen in ur website because i cant risk being without a vehicle .. its my daily driver and im in college so im not looking to beat it off road to badly because i have to drive it 220 miles each time i go home.. and a 5 speed will just put a big smile on my face because ive always wanted one

Jerry Bransford Keep it, your TJ will lose much of its offroad strengths if you convert to a 5-speed. I converted from a 5-speed to my current 3-speed automatic earlier this year and it completely transformed my TJ offroad. The auto improved my TJ's offroad abilities much like when I converted from front and rear Truetracs to front and rear lockers.

IslandTJ Why? Majority of Jeepers are making the opposite decision. Is it due to your wheeling style? I was a diehard "stick" or manual trans fan until I purchased my 3speed TJ, I won't be going back to a manual.

Anyone want to swap their manual for my auto?

I have a 1997 TJ and I am considering doing an auto to manual swap. Anyone interested in a 3 speed auto?
