07 wrangler, stuck in drive! help! :)

Hi all!
im new to this, but basically here is my problem.
Two days ago, i drove my jeep to the shops and on the way i pulled over. I put it in Park on the gear shifter, took my foot of the brake and it moved forward. I looked at the electronic readout on dash and it still said it was in park!
I can move the shifter around like normal, and the button still appears to work.
When i got to the shops i turned the engine off, the car refused to start (presumably because it was still in drive)
We towed it home with our land rover, it did not start while being towed either.
Does anyone know what might have happened?
has this happened to someone before?
I dont mind taking it to a dealer, but if it is a quick fix i would love to know
any help would be greatly appreciated.
