Triple88a In that case I'd go with 3" suspension lift and another in bl and add some 33s

Look at the tire prices though the jump from 33s to 35s is not that much

KellyK Well my "plan" for now is to do some lighting mods,get rid of the damn tape deck and tuna can speakers, and im thinking of just a 2" spacer lift.
Its a toy but i still have to run the 3 little kids around. My brother is pushing for a 4" lift but i cant afford big rubber... i have a firarm addiction i still have to throw a bone once and

Dont abuse it, basically that's it. Don't launch it, if the rear starts jumping, let off the gas. etc. With stock wheels it should be fine but if you go to 33s or 35s, you have to baby it. I've had 35s on mine for the over half a year now and still no problems.

Snowbanks will be fine btw

KellyK Now i dont "plan" on doing any major wheelin with this jeep but will the "turd axel club" be able to work trails,snow banks, or even the puddle that builds up at the serwer intake on the road? or whould i swerve to miss those?

I just want to know what kind of stuff to look out for..

While the '97 with a 4.0L engine came with either a 3.07 or 3.55, the OP's '99 has either a 3.07 or 3.73. Jeep has never installed 3.56 gears in a TJ meant to be sold in the US.

KellyK Ok so i went over to my brothers and we crawled under there so he could tell me how screwed i was ....
He said im leaking what seems to look like "gear oil" from my ... i want to say "marion housing???"

He pulled his finger out of that area and showed me something red. and said that someone had been in there before because he has never seen a red seal from a factory.

Now i love my brother and all but does he know what the hell he is talkin about????

im sure i sound like a total jack ass with that one..
Should have worn my helmet when my short bus rolled over huh....

And i did find that my gearing is 3.73 on the 31"s

CVFD76 but dont trust fully wat it says, iv read on here somewhere where a few people pulled their diff apart and the gears were different than what the tag said

4point The gear ratio is stamped on this tag. Its just under the layer grime.

KellyK yeah the tires are 30/9.5
I will have it checked out. Do you think it is a major problem?... something i can put off till the weekend?

Hebera If your Jeep came with the big wheel package 30x9.5 then your gearing should be 3.56 if those tires are 235/75/15's then your gearing should be 3.07 Jeeps in general have a very low first gear, this being your first Jeep you might not have realized how low it is. Cruising at 70 your RPM's should be in the 2000 -2300 range, thats how my Jeep was, I had the big wheel package on it and 3.56 gears with the 5 speed. Yes those oil marks are not normal and if you still have the warranty I would get it checked out. Hope this helps

nicolas-eric Perhaps the oil comes from a leak at the pinion where the front driveshaft is attached at the transfer case.

Is there enough oil in the TC? Park the TJ on levelled ground and open teh fill plug (you can see it on the pic below). The TC must be filled up to this plug.

KellyK Well first off.... i dont know squat about mechanics

Here are pics of what i see.
I'm going out on a limb and guessing that the oil like substance to the left of the transfer case is not normal???
I dont know why its there... but it looks fresh. Any ideas? I did get a power train warranty with the jeep so if need be i can fix that if its a prob.

slf41002 If he has granny gear in first i would say that he has way lower than 3.07 and more than likely lower than 3.73.I would say either it has been regeared or if not a Rubi has the 4.1 mod on the t-case.If it is a Rubi it does have the 4.1 ratio t-case.I think that is correct as mine unfortunately isn't a rubi just a diamond in the rough.

Jerry Bransford Your gearing is either 3.73 or 3.07. If your rear axle's differential cover is perfectly oval-shaped with a black snap-in cover in the lubricant fill hole, it's a Dana 35c. If the cover is more stop-sign shaped and more angular, not oval-shaped, with a threaded steel bolt in the lube fill hole it's the stronger Dana 44.

What are your rpms at 70 mph and what size tires are you running?

And what RPM should be my cruising speed?

Gearing question.

Yet another thread from me. Pretty soon i just might know something about

So i have a 99 Tj 4.0 5speed.
This is my first jeep so i wasnt sure if i should have low gearing.
1st is almost like a granny gear.
I went and looked at the read transfer case and could only make out these numbers stamped in it.

The dana logo and then these numbers.


Make any sense you anyone?
What gearing am i running and what rear axel ?
I tried to find anything that looked like a tag but there was none. Just the stamp in the back.
