FreedomEdition Hi Jar3d, I've also got a 2003 Freedom Edition... ticking... Did you ever get to the bottom of your "ticking" issue...?

Your Help will be Greatly Appreciated,

John B.

I've owned the Jeep for about 1.5 years and have had the 'ticking' occur twice in the last month. It's a '99 TJ with 3spd auto and about 87K on the odometer. During both occurrences, the engine was at operating temperature, shut off for several minutes and then re-started.

Should I be worried? I've read about 'piston slap' and lifter noise but don't know if they are intermittent, etc.?
Can somebody help me?

TIA for your comments.

I dont have a definite answer but i have the same occurance. I had just purchased a 2003 Tj freedom edition with 114k on the odom. 6 cyl 5 speed. After doing some research on the forum there could be a couple reasons ranging from the oil being too thin to exhaust leaks... But for certain there is something i did take notice too. Prior to purchase the owner had been using castrol oil gtx? 10w-30 and on the ride home (from jersey to pa) i didnt notice any ticking at all... The day after i got it home i had to go and get it inspected, so i took it to my local shop Monroe Muffler and Brake. Franchise owner was working that day and we were chatting about jeeps, he said he use to have one with same motor etc, and advised me that if i were to use too thin of oil it was gonna tick like a bastard. Since the oil was due in 500 miles i decided get a fresh change and have them grease it up on the rack and take a look at everything. Everything was solid except front stabilizer which was replaced for pretty cheap price. They had put 10w30 valvoline oil in it (premium) whatever that is... The next day i got to fire it up to go to work and i hear this intermittent ticking sound. Thought maybe it was the clutch since the throwout has been making a racket so i pushed the clutch in and it was still ticking. Reved it up a tad and it went away. Comes back periodically through out the day but after shes good and hot it doesnt seem to happen as much... I was debating on throwing in some lucas or some sort of oil additive but ive never had to use in the past and reviews are mixed both good and bad. But like i said, some people claim the engine is loud, maybe a little tappet sound here and there, some claim piston slam, others claim sticky lifters. But there is one thing i do know is it did not make this noise prior to changing oil. Currently searching for more answers but i figured id chime in with my story. GL
