I have the JL 8" you mentioned x2...8w3's, one in factory location, the other in a custom box under rear seat.
I think you would be able to run sub amp only, but the sub(s) will drown out the other factory speakers...for just being 8's they hit pretty well.

|Ray finkle||you don't want to have 2 different box sizes the subs are not going to sound as good. you want them in the exact same box size|

thanks ray and Dmac,
when i was asking about the two subs, I meant the alpine box, as well as another alpine sub in the stock box.
So could I run a line lever converter from the stock amp to a two channel amp to power both the stock box (with a new alpine sub in it) as well as an alpine box+sub?
What are your thoughts on that?

|Ray finkle||You can add an aftermarket sub and amp to the system using what is called a line Level converter. It is usually around a $20 part. it will tie into the factory sub speaker wire and convert it to RCAs so you can run that into an aftermarket amp. The JL sub box is a very popular box and sounds great for people looking for just a little more base then what a factory system supplies. I would not recommend running the factory sub with an aftermarket sub.|

I've done a full system upgrade but still have the stock 130 head unit. You will need to remove the stock sub because it is crap. It is flimsy and has a small magnet, no travel, etc. I replaced mine with a Kicker Comp vr 2ohm DVC. I put it in the stock box and had to make a spacer ring for it from 3/4" MDF. At first I ran it off the stock amp, which operates at 2ohms. There are two plugs because the stock sub has DVCs as well. It was barely noticeable.
So I did a ton of research aand ended up buying the Rockford Fosgate Punch 300x1 amp because of it's size and the fact that it is 1ohm stable. Much improved!! You'll need to run your power wire and ground like any other sub but this amp has speaker level inputs, aka hi-level inputs. There is a harness that comes with the amp that will allow you to splice the sub wires into the amp harness and this provides the signal and because it's speaker level it will also serve to power the amp on and off.
As for the two subs, they way you mention keeping the stock and adding one, I would advise against. The stock amp will also not add more to the front speakers. If I were to do it all over again I would have ordered 2 of the same Kicker subs but gotten 4ohm DVC so I could wire them in parallel to 1 ohm. This would give the right power to both subs. I would also get a box for them rather than using the stock enclosure. Don't get me wrong, it is 100x better than stock but there's more to be had. I was trying to stick with the stock HU but I'm going to replace it with a NAV unit with backup camera to help me see past the 35" spare and improve sound quality.
I know that's a long response but here's what I would do. Tap the sub wires into the RF Punch 300x1 and go with a 10" or 12" sub that has 2ohm DVCs and can handle 250-300 watts RMS at 1ohm. Hope that helps.

Adding a Sub Questions
I've been thinking about many different sub options, and I've brought it down to either the alpine SBR-S83V or the JL 8 inch micro sub. both of these are pretty much the same thing- a tiny, enclosed 8 inch ported sub box.
I don't need much bass, this will be fine for me. What I was wondering was-
1) How can I install this sub without any other sound modifications (other than a sub amp) So how could I tie this into my current infinity sound system?
2) is it possible to install this sub, and keep my current sub? Would that add more volume or what?
3) could I add this sub, and swap the factory sub with either the alpine or JL sub so that I have two 8 inch subs, one in the stock infinity box, one in the box I will buy. I realize both these subs would need to be powered but do not know how to install.
4) On another note, would taking the stock sub off the stock infinity amp have an effect on it powering the speakers and tweeters? Like would they be louder?
Thanks for the help!
