Blind Dog Hope this gives some ideas.
This is all welded except for the 2 pop rivets that hold the metal box onto the upright. I suppose it could be bolted up, too, and some soldered maybe.
I used a DOT rated brake/tail lamp from O'Reilly's and only wired up the brake light part.

Box was fabricated from 22 guage steel

Steel 1" square tubing with the top end welded shut with a piece of scrap steel
The bigger hole in the middle is for a rubber grommet to protect the wires, the little holes for the rivets.

Welded to the spare tire mount ^^^

Blind Dog ^ That's spiffy^
I have a tire cover so I'll build mine to stick up over the spare though. Changed my mind on the aluminum. Hard to keep paint on it and a little bit of a pain to weld or braze compared to steel. Going with steel 1" square tubing instead. I'll put up pics when I get it done.

lynn Custom Mini-LEDs installed in my swingout:

The stock wiring was spliced for some additional length, and feeds inside the swing arm.

The Mini-LEDs are from Ebay.

Blind Dog I just picked up a generic brake/tail light today and am making the bracket out of 1-1/4" O.D. aluminum tubing so the wire can be run inside it. Got the tubing at True Value Hardware for a different project a while ago.

Flashole I put on a spare tire carrier and lost my 3rd brake light. I moved my licens plate to the center of my spare and used one of these. It's both a 3rd brake light and license plate light, and it's barely visible. Don't remember where I ordered it, but here is a link to it from Quadratec.

x2. I can't tell you how many things I have rewired because the PO splices connections wrong or used several short pieces of wire to make a long one. Drives me crazy. I spent 4 hours rewiring a golf cart due to crappy wire job on the lights.

Bronek So many options with electronics. Could grab a simple LED bar and wire it pretty much anywhere. Could stick a light out through the centre of the spare tire, assuming you don't run a cover. Could modify a bar over the spare tire.

Wiring can be easily and discretely ran anywhere. There is no excuse for exposed wires anywhere. Make sure to solder your connections for best results. I hate seeing white caps or electrical tape joining connectors.

Wheel2Work How much of the original wiring do you still have in the tailgate? It will make a difference on how you wire it up.

If you use the existing contacts in the tailgate, you can make a bracket to fit.

There are also "plug-n-play lights that will work, like here jeep third brake light | eBay if you want to use the Hyline, Rampage or AEV style 3rd brake lights.
