|Atthehop||If the rpm's are below 1200 and the engine is lugging and pinging you need to go into a lower gear to get the rpm's up above 1500. I try to keep my rpm's above 2000 all the time since the torque curve is too low below that. Not hard to do with a 5 speed because all I need to do is downshift.|

I believe I am also experiencing spark knock... 02 TJ, 4.0L, NV3550, 93K. When I accelerate on any kind of hill with the RPMs below 1200, I get this rattling noise. The noise is only when I'm in gear, and only at low RPM's it almost always stops by 1500 or so. My father listened to it the other day and thought it was a ping, but I know nothing about this. He had mentioned it could be a timing issue?
Obviously, since mine does it even when the gas isn't floored, I would like to get it fixed. Any suggestions on what to try or do to get this thing running smoothly again?

I cannot run in 4th below 35 mph with my 4cyl and on hills it worse but I learned to live with it and get 19 MPG highway and 17 city hwy mix. That's what they make truck lanes on the interstates for, you and me.
When I was working, downsized earlier this year, I never went over 65 with my 100 mile rt commute and still had to gas up every third day. Don't miss that part of it with today's gas prices.

|veedawg||Yeah. You were right. Thanks for that help. Had great power after that then took out out again and had very little in 4th. Changing brakes now|

|Atthehop||If fresh gas did the trick then it was spark knock (ping) that you were experiencing.|

|veedawg||I havnt changed the plugs yet. But i did change the gas. Noise gone. Its still under powered in 4th and 5th. But that could be my tight brakes. I hope? Putting on new cslipers tomorrow. It drive great though after changing the gas, power was good and then went away. Up to 3rd gear is still good. I can barely push it in neutral. Do you guys think the new calipers will help the power issue?|

|kshaws21||Simplist solution? Don't put the pedal to the floor. Why would you ever do that? No need. You can wind it up pretty good without ever putting it to the floor so if your problem only occurs when you do that.....don't!|

|veedawg||It doesn't do it all the time and its not rhythmic. Also the motor only has 19000 miles. I bought it from the place where i work. The maintenance guys here would have never let it run low on oil|

loud rattle grinding noise, need help before wife kills me
I just bought a1997 4cyl Jeep Wrangler today. Its all stock. It had 19,000 real miles on it. Its been parked for 2 years. The front brakes are locked up. I freed them up enough to drive but they have tightened up again. I'll be replacing the calipers today. My real problem is the loud rattle, kind of grinding noise that comes from the drivers side front when i have the accelerator to the floor. It does it in every gear except 1st and reverse. I can rev the motor in neutral and it didn't make the sound. Its only when moving. When I'm easy on the accelerator it doesn't do it. Its worse in 4th. It also loses power in 4th. But the power seems ok when the brakes aren't locked. Could it just be the locked up brakes. It is more of a terrible rattle than a grind. Thanks for the help.and also its only the driver side caliper that locked up. Replacing both sides though
