Mine didn't fit great and I wasn't too happy with it. I managed to fit it acceptably but still used a small bead of black silicone to make it perfect

hayessj I can appreciate the mod. I think that if you do it right, a bunch of cool subtle modifications can really make a big impact when the overhaul is completed.

I busted my ass once to pull my bikes swingarm off just to flat black the damn thing!

I hope you didn't get those handles from China though. That painted aluminum fades worse than the plastic. Trust me on that one.

RB-10rubicon Very nice .i just came across these in qtech mag and was thinking about changing mine getting tired of the handles fading .i did see them cheaper in jc whitney for $43 bucks a peice

I haven't noticed them getting too warm but the hottest day I've left it sitting outside was about 98. I guess the litmus test would be to grab a few metal door handles on a hot day in the carpark before committing. Definitely not missing the plastic though.

Cars just aren't made with character anymore. They're not made for personality, they're made to sell. It's a shame how our society has become so fleeting, nothing is ever built to last.

blw2000 I personally like the idea of replacing all the plastic on my JK with aluminum, but now that I see even inside the door card the mechanics are all plastic, I give up. Modern vehicles are so plasticky I can't imagine restoring one 25 years from now...

I know just how you feel. I put in blue led dome lights in my jeep. Hell, I just polished some of the chrome accents today. These are small things people don't really notice, but for myself it's like a new makeover

Thanks mate, and yes, way better then chrome although it's 'slight' and most people wouldn't notice it, to me it's made a huge difference. Its not for everyone but aesthetically it's night and day and just one more reason to be stoked on my Jeep!

Moose5 Seems like a lot of money and work for such a slight cosmetic upgrade. Theyre ALOT better than those chrome handles though if you ask me. But they are nice

The interior door panel has 10x10mm bolts to be removed but it also has the door handle linkage and the power window motor. If you go that route make sure the window is taped in the up position as the whole motor will need to come out.

In retrospect it's not too difficult but will add a fair bit of time to the install. My decision was based on future access. If I need I change or adjust the handles for any reason I can get access within 5 mins (5 bolts and pull off the liner).

To make it a cleaner install (ie, if I hadn't just charged ahead with the tools on hand... But that requires patience ) I'd use a dremel tool or something similar to cut the access holes. That way it'd look neat and be a bit easier then using the drill bit it all get covered up anyway so it's not a big deal.

Rampage Door Handle Install notes for JK 2012

Hey everyone. I thought I'd post a really quick install guide for the Rampage Stainless Steel Door handle. I installed these on my 2012 Wrangler Unlimited Altitude (5 handles total) and I love the way it's really lifted the look of the exterior.

First off, the guide that it comes with is pretty lame, but the install is easy if you don't mind taking a shortcut or two.

Removing the door liner is simple. There are 5 bolts in total
- 2 on the edge of the door trim (location depends on front or back doors but they are very visible)
- 1 behind the inside door handle trim (reach in and pop pit the inside hatch with your fingers, it lifts right off for access)
- 2 behind the plastic trim in the arm rest. Just pull the trim directly outwards with needlenose pliers or a trim lifting tool

At this point also remove the inner door handle trim, it lifts right out after the single bolt has been removed.

Once these have been removed start lifting the door liner up and towards you, away from the door frame. There are 7 or 8 trim fasteners that need to be pulled with force directly outwards. You will hear them pop as they release, be very careful as you do so that they don't snap off. I advise reaching in behind the trim and carefully guiding them out, it's fiddly but not hard.

Once the trim fasteners have released the entire door liner lifts up and out to release from the window guard. If you are working on a front door you will also need to detach the power lock at this point, leave that actual mechanism on the door liner, there is a quick release on the inside to detach the electrics.

Here's where it gets fun, and a little unconventional. The purist would see the interior door panel and start removing that too, I started and decided it was too much work, so I created access points for the door handle fasteners. See the Rampage door handles are held on with only two nuts and there are no linkages or anything to reconnect, so all you need to do is remove the original nuts from the inside of the door, remove the OEM handle, and replace it with the Rampage handle (don't forget to transfer the interior handle gaskets).

One nut can be found behind the rubber plug near the outside edge of the door. Unscrew it with a 8mm socket and extension bar.

Once this is off use a light to shine through the door cavity and locate the second nut. Eyeball or measure up where it should be and carefully drill a couple of 1/2" hole into the interior door panel. It's only plastic and as long as you are careful there isn't anything that can be damaged (it goes without saying that the window should be UP at all times in this install )

With the new access hole drilled you should easily be able to use the same socket extension to remove the remaining nut from the OEM handle after which the entire handle can be removed from the door.

Install the new handle and simply install everything back in reverse order.

Lessons I learned...
  • After tweaking on the first one I got it down to about 20mins per door. Be very careful on the first one and then you'll fly through them
  • The tailgate is very simple, follow their directions and don't use excessive force in removing the access panel. You'll need an 8mm small spanner to get in there
  • Don't drop a socket head into the interior of the door panel. You'll feel all clever cheating the system with access hole... right up until you drop a tool on the inside. Getting that piece back is not fun, so be very careful when pulling back on the nuts from the access holes
  • I re-used the OEM nuts rather then the supplied Nylocks, it was just easier and I figured they'd do just as good a job.
  • DO NOT over-tighten the nuts on the new Rampage handles. I sheered off the actual bolt on one of them by over torquing it and I was not impressed. If you do make such a bonehead mistake, swear violently, then just buy a few 2" #10:32 machine screws. Screw it into the handle until it stops them cut the new bolt to length.
In all these cost me about $250 and took about 3.5 hours (with learning curve) to install all five. They work great and look better. Have fun!
