|YellerJeep||Most DMV's will only let you do a street legal motor swap if the motor is offered by the maker off the vehicle. 350 chevy motor in a jeep is really popular in trail rigs or if you keep it hush hush and have a bubby inspect it. You would be better off with the 5.7 or new 6.1 HEMI any way b/c they have the fuel saving cylinder cut outs making great MPG's.|

You can do pretty much anything you want in Michigan. If you have headlights, taillights, turn signals, rear view mirror.
They also have frame, bumper, and headlight height requirements but there rarely inforced. I have a Chevy pickup with a 12in lift and 44s and I have only gotten warnings.
There are no checks of any kind in Michigan. I've put a 350 into a 4x4 S15 a few years ago and would like to eventually put a fuel injected 350 into a Jeep.
With a motor and trans out of a newer full size Chevy pickup and an 8.8 Ford rear axle out of a 96 and newer Explorer you should be able to run 4.11 gears with 35s and have a lot more power and better gas mileage.
There are other options that would be easier than the 350 swap. You can buy or build a 4.0 into a stroked 4.7 or buy a supercharger for your 4.0. I even thought about building a lower compression 4.7 stroker and supercharging that. I'm not positive but I think if you went that route you should still pass emissions.

|AzTJ||Like the 'Doc said... check your states laws about this stuff first. In Arizona, I believe you need a motor that is of the same year vehicle or newer.|

|jpdocdave||350 will go in your tj just like anything else, sounds like you want 350 right? BUT, check your state emission laws. some states are gonna make it almost impossible, some are not. here if its older than 1996 you can do whatever, after that though it has to be obd2 compliant, and if the check engine light is on, or computer doesn't agree with what motor is in it it will fail, and you will not get license plates.|
