C.L. Maybe the starter is caked with grit? You'd hear that grinding away only at startup. And if the solenoid return spring is weak, the motor may be spinning up the starter for a little while after you release the key.

SPEC-01 If there is no other sound relative to clutch engagement/release then this is unlikely. If there were mud/grit between the clutch disc and corresponding pressure-plate and flywheel surfaces you would expect to hear the noise at times other than start-up only. I agree with not stepping on the clutch pedal, and thus releasing the clutch, in situations like this but the sound is seemingly there only during start-up. The one thing that happens during start-up, but occurs at no other time, is the actuation of the bindex and its subsequent interaction with the ring-gear.

That'd be my first guess too. The clutch pedal should never be stepped on when in deep mud. Doing so just lets mud flow in between the clutch disk and flywheel.

SPEC-01 Is the sound there only when you have the ignition turned to start the car? If so it could easily be Bindex/Starter related.

Rob and TJ Hmmmm interesting location for a noise like that. If its the 4.0 the noise should be centralized since everything is inline. It is possible that if u turned the jeep off while the tailpipe was under water that you sucked some water into the motor. My reccomendation is change the oil but run seafoam in the old oil. I.e go to oriellys dump the seafoam in the oil in their parking lot drive home and change the oil. Do not run seafoam for more than a few miles before changing. When you change the oil look for a zinc additive. This helps the 4.0 run a little smoother. If the problem persists after runnig for about 50 miles. Have somone there at start up so you can pinpoint the noise directly. Keep me posted! Hope this works

It sounds like metal on metal and it sounds like it's coming from below the engine on the driver's side.

Rob and TJ Since the whole motor creates friction generally could you be more specific as to where the noise generates from? Checked ur oil to be sure it's not contaminated? Is this a metal on metal noise or an electric noise? Perhaps rubber on metal?

jeepwayoflife Maybe clutch? Did you use the clutch while stuck in there? I assume you did because you must have stopped and started the engine. If you did, it could have allowed mud inbetween the clutch and flywheel, but its weird that its only for a couple seconds

amarillojeepguy im gonna say it could be cooling fan maybe??? i mudded in mine and got a weird vibration but it would hppen when fan kicked on so on second thought that might not be it lol but keep and eye out and keep your jeep washed on in the engine bay lol

Weird friction noise when I start up.

So Saturday(about 5 days ago) I went mudding with my buddies and I got stuck for two hours and my front passenger side tire was almost completely submerged. The intake was clean of any mud and everything works how it should except for when I start the engine, the first 2 seconds it makes a weird friction noise and then it's gone once the engine is fully started and running. If it helps, I have a standard transmission. Could it be my starter or do I have a loose belt under the hood or what?
