Diehard Platinum P4 here too. I like it so much I took out a perfectly good Mopar battery to make room for the P4. I just didn't like the idea of bumping a hole in it or jarring something loose inside.
3 to 10+ years ago, Optima were the ONLY battery to run in a jeep. They were the best especially in tandem, when running a winch. But I see less and less of them on the trails as the old ones wear out and the new ones don't live up to the past reputation.
As other, very wise men pointed out it would be hard to beat Sears warranty and the quantity and convenience of the many hundreds of Sears locations. I waited for a sale then jumped on it.

|Jerry Bransford||Yep, too bad Optima had to sell out to Johnson Controls who moved their manufacturing down to Mexico. I went through three fairly Optimas that all failed prematurely, never again. I'm sticking with the Diehard Platinum P4 which is also known as the 34-78DT which I've had in two TJs now.|

|Timelord83||i was going to pickup to yellow tops for the dual battery setup in my TJ, the kit i found mounts the battery's on the long side down. will the Die-hard P4 mount the same way without leaking? I run dual yellow tops in my Ram 1500 for plowing they are 5 years old and going strong. Dunno when the buy-out happened but that makes me sad|

I have heard many stories about Optimas dying and I had a yellow top that came with my LJ completely die on me 30 miles from home. Luckily my dad had a Sears Diehard Platinum in his Manual TJ and we swapped batteries and pull started his Jeep.
I have a friend who works for Johnson Controls who now owns Optima and even with his kickback that he gets from work, he will not buy them after they exported production to Mexico.
We run the Diehard Platinums in our Jeeps and they haven't given us a single bit of trouble. I still have the battery that we swapped into my LJ and after 5 full years it still starts the Jeep like it was just put in there.

|Motowithy||Had a red top for 7 years swapped it through 3 dif vehicles and finally died in my jeep. Bought a new one and it died in under 3. If I didn't get the replacement for free, I would be upset. When the current one goes I will def be replacing with a different battery. Quality of optima has def changed for the worst.|

I work part time for one of the big auto parts stores. We had so much trouble with the latest Optimas that we had our entire stock put up at 50% off.
Didn't sell a one. They are now sitting on a shelf in the back of the store, pretty much hidden from view.
I'm with Jerry, the DieHard is the one now.

I've yet to read of a customer of Sears being told that their vehicle has a charging issue or it's the wrong product for the application, or that the battery in question is identical in quality to the ones from yesteryear. I do however see those very same things by Optima owners quite frequently.
As far as Sears doing it, I doubt in this instance that it makes much sense given the warranty they offer on the Diehard Platinum.

|DevilDogDoc||I have been lucky with mine. I have a red top that I bought about 2 years ago from a guy for $25. He had "upgraded" to a blue top to run his onboard welder, he had this one in his jeep for 5 years or so. My jeep sat in the garage for the last month or so as I swapped axles, my whole suspension rockers and other odds and ends. Fired up flawlessly yesterday after sitting all that time. That said if and when this red top dies a diehard will replace it, no confidence in the new optimas anymore but the old ones had it right.|

That is the meaning of "captive logo". Sears OWNS the Diehard logo, but they DO NOT OWN a battery plant. So they make deals with contract manufacturers such as Exide or Johnson Controls or Odyssey. It is normal to cash in on a reputation for quality by switching to a cheaper source. Sears has done this several times over the last 30 years.

|r3v0lution||In Fort Smith, just about 45 mins from where I live, there is a GNB facility, which is an Exide company... I believe they have an affiliation with AGM, although I'm not sure what that is.. They do however have operations in more than 80 countries. So I'm not sure what your chances of getting a US made battery are.|

I have the diehard platinum p4, and its amazing.
My jeep broke down a couple weeks ago, and in trying to diagnose I had to turn it over MANY time without it actually starting (fuel system issue) when all was said and done, it ran the starter without getting any recharge for more than half an hour over the course of a week and never showed any sign of letting up. After figuring it out I had to wait another week on parts, when I got them installed it fired up like it was a brand new fresh battery... I was very impressed. More than once I had to sit with it cranking and the fuel rail open, and im talking a min or two at a time, constant.
I have no fear of running the stereo, inverter, or winching with the motor off, or pretty much any demanding task I could put on the battery. I know its still gonna start me up when Im done.

|little1989jeep||I ran one in my Ford truck for two years. When the mod motor crapped the battery went to our Massey Ferguson 253 for a year then dropped a cel. Returned it to advance raised all sorts of Cain got a new one that's two years old and never died yet. It will be moving to my jeep here shortly|

|TA462||I've had a Optima Red Top in my Trans Am for over 10 years now with no problems and the same on in my 99 GMC Pickup for going on 5 years now. Eventually someone will get a dud while 99% of everyone else never has a problem. It's like that with everything.|

The Diehard Platinum Marine battery is a true deep cycle battery and as such, it wouldn't be a good choice. A true deep cycle battery's electrical traits just aren't the right choice for a vehicle like a Jeep or car.
Since you're worried about the Platinum's side posts like we know are bad for winches on the Optima Yellow Top, you can always add a pair of short battery-gauge jumpers like I did in the below photo when I used to run Optima batteries.
The below shows my old Optima Blue Top with the same short jumpers I made and added when I ran the Yellow Tops with side posts. Those two short jumpers carry the heavy amperage load of the winch to the main posts in parallel with the weaker internal connections. For those who wonder why I ran the Optima Blue Top which is described as a Marine battery by Optima but don't recommend the Diehard Platinum Marine, Optima's Blue Top Marine not a true Deep Cycle battery... the D34M Optima Marine battery in the below photo is actually the same battery internally as the 3478 Yellow Top is with only its post connections on top being different.
All that said, I don't believe the Diehard Platinum has the auxilliary post problem that the Optima batteries do which make them unsuitable for winches. While Optima's auxilliary are ok for lighter winching, the heavy >400 ampere loads a fully loaded winch can present can cause the Optima's internal connections to the side posts to fail. I don't believe the P4 (3478-DT) Diehard Platinum side posts have that problem.

The reason I am asking because i believe the dual top mounted post are better suited for mounting the winch cables or how do feel about mounting winch cables to the side terminals? I did notice that the marine battery doesn't have as great of a warranty? Thanks for your insight!|

|sp33dfr33k||A few years back I built a Mustang, I put in a 351, with a Red Top in the trunk, drove it mostly on the weekends and during the summer with the top down. It worked fine, so I bought another and put it in my GMC pickup. The one that was in my truck died far too soon and I was told the fable about "not charging correctly" and pointed out the thing was driven every day, where as the one I bought years earlier and put in the mustang was still fine. I took the one out of the mustang and put it in the GMC, then a die hard went in the mustang. The mustang had the die hard in it for 5 years till I sold it, working fine. The GMC Red Top Optima originally from the mustang lasted a total of 7 years in both vehicles till they were sold. I believe it was a quality issue with the second Red Top I bought for the GMC. I personally wont buy another Optima because they were complete asses to me, but it could've been a fluke situation with just that one battery. Just my own personal experience. I'll be trying a dual battery system in the "new to me" TJ. but as far as brands go...??? not even a clue anymore as to what is decent, it seems to me like "Sears" still has a really good rep., I think that's what my brother's dad always ran in the "Conversion" van back in the 70's, It powered a t.v., fridge, stereo, c.b., and that A/C unit pretty well.|

|Jerry Bransford||The issue on batteries some offroading Jeep owners aren't aware of is how the shocks and vibrations of offroading can damage conventional flooded cell (wet) batteries. A big enough jolt offroad can cause a piece of lead to come off and short the cell out. That is why so many of us run AGM batteries where that can't happen due to their solid construction where the lead is not suspended in liquid acid... the construction of an AGM battery is like a sandwich where the lead and fiberglass matting with the acid paste pressed into it is compressed into a very tight integrated unit that won't come apart offroad. For street use and mild offroading, a conventional battery would hold up. Conventional batteries may or may not hold up in tougher offroad scenarios but an AGM sure will. I'm willing to pay a little more for AGM for that reason.|

|fan of fanboys||I don't run accessories like a winch or anything but for daily driving my Interstate battery has been flawless and it's going on 6-7 years now I think. I originally had in my Bronco with 5.0 and moved it to my TJ couple years ago.|
