|slf41002||Yes you can unhook the heater hoses the other being at the water pump and flush the core with a garden hose.I would also check into a water pump since the coolant was rusty you have had some kind of metalic brake down to cause very much rust.A small amount maybe but very much at all and I would say you will find once removed that the water pump impeller will be almost gone.|

I checked the archives for this problem but have another question. My heater is blowing lukewarm at best. The thermostat is working correctly although it is a 185. The engine temp is just below 210 at the guage. I earlier flushed the engine and radiator with Prestone flush. At the same time I turned the heater on full hot so I assumed the core would be flushed also. There was a lot of rusty water in the engine. The heater did not improve.
Today, after a ten mile drive I felt the heater hoses. The hose coming from the thermostat housing, which I figure is the inlet hose, was hot as the radiator hose while the other wasn't nearly so. I don't see any vacumm lines or other devices attached to either hose. I think the easiest next step is to flush the core through the heater hoses and that brings me finally to my question.
Can I unhook the two hoses at the thermostat housing and wherever the second one attaches and backflush the core with a garden hose at low flow? If not, how would you folks recommend I do it? I've read as much about all of this as I can find but I still want to make sure. I haven't seen a write up on it. Maybe a stupid question but hey, I ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer.
