|Colt45||Just saying an 8" can be efficient and is capable of less than 60 Hz. You get what you pay for. It's not the 8" sub that is inefficient but the cheap speaker. I'm not sure I would ever put the 8W7 in my Jeep because I'm pretty sure it would do more damage than it's worth.|

|Ibuildembig||Im familiar with JL stuff....and that sub is way more money than most people want to spend|

|I-Want-A-Jeep||OH WOW! I hadn't visited their website in quite a while! I'll have to check into what's going on... That makes me really sad!!|

I rocked the original Elemental Designs E12A22 for the longest time, great sub; 1200RMS at 1 ohm and weighed 47 lbs... it was a beast! I figured it probably wouldn't fit in my Jeep though, so I sold it. Seems like they are out of business or something though - I ordered an SQ10 from them, they never processed my order or took my money. I emailed them a couple months later about the open status of my order, and they never responded. Now their site is down, and has been for almost a month; sad to see a good company like that go out.
I've heard a few good 8" systems that hit pretty well, but as ibuildembig said, it takes a lot of time designing and building the right enclosure. I wouldn't recommend them for the budget conscious or anyone who doesn't know their way around box building.

|I-Want-A-Jeep||I like the "Oh neat" response with small subs... However I have a 12" waiting for an enclosure.. It's in the Charger right now...|

|Ibuildembig||I'm not knocking them other than for less cash and less work, there are other things better suited. After doing car audio for 25 years I've seen pretty much all of it.|

|I-Want-A-Jeep||^^ I like that, just don't wanna go through hacking the seat... I've been lazy on the subwoofer... I have my headunit, amp, components, and wiring all in... just need to build another enclosure and install sub and amp...|

It aint pretty, and it aint comfortable, but a slim 12 can fit inside the bottom of your rear seat:

They were fairly cheap.. I believe I paid $80+shipping each.. There was a guy at the company I bought them from - Elemental Designs - who had 32 of them glassed into the hatch of his Scion tC.. It was really neat, not sure if he ever got around to metering it though..
My point being, don't discount the small subwoofers.. With the right enclosure and power, just about anything can sound pretty dang good!

|Ibuildembig||Oh I know but I'm sure they weren't cheap either? I used to be a Focal dealer and a demo car with 25 of their 5.25 subs and it metered 155.7 off the dash. My point is I'd rather have a good 10-12 over a bunch of 8s|

^^ That's funny... I had 2 6.5" subs in a 30Hz ported enclosure and it had plenty of oomph in the sub 50Hz range.. peaked around 129db @ 38Hz..
Say what you like, I have no problem with smaller subwoofers. Sure you can get a lot more out of larger subs, but it was really fun when most people thought I had at least a 10" sub in the back.. The look on their faces when they would see 2 6.5" subs was rather amusing...

|Ibuildembig||An 8 is very non efficient and pretty much non existant under 60Hz anyway|

|eboven||30hz is a very low frequency. The human ear can only hear 20hz and above up to 20khz... so 30hz is barely audible. When you say it will run at 40hz, you make even less sense. The resonant frequency may be around 40hz, but the sub will still hit any note up to 100hz or so, depending on where your crossover is set. Please stop spreading your half-way knowledge around. Get the facts, or don't add anything at all, else you risk further confusing people.|

|Jma20a||his frequency range goes down to 30 hz, so the sub would really be running in the 40's and maybe upper 30's. my 12 has a range going down to the lower teens but runs in the high 20's to mid 30's.|
|10-01-2012 12:48 PM|
|lolpetewtf||30Hz is not a high frequency.|
|10-01-2012 12:43 PM|
|Jma20a||30 is a high frequency. But with 4 of them it might sound a bit better, you should have gone with one big enclosure and port it. It will give you a deeper sound.|
|10-01-2012 12:04 PM|
|bhcmst||The subs are 8". Their frequency response goes to 30 hz so yea, wish it went lower but they still sound really nice!|
|09-30-2012 02:54 PM|
|Jma20a||how small are those subs? in that space you can fit 2 10's easy, but 4 little ones, no low end frequencies with those.|

Custom subwoofer box, after all else fails!
I'm a 2nd time TJ owner and love me some bass. I've never liked any of the custom sub boxes on the market, and have tried quite a few. I decided to make my own, because I wanted a custom look/setup and still keep the back seat in.
Well, here's what I came up with. Plans are attached also, if anyone is interested.
**My calculations were a bit off and I needed to trim some off the top left and top right corners of the box. If I were to build it again, I would do the depth at 7.5" and the height at 13" (this will give .35 cu/ft per chamber).**
