Salty1 Below is a link for a forum that discusses the backroads of Big Bend, worth looking at...

Salty1 I was there over Christmas, what a great park and not very crowded at all. Black Gap Road is a must, only one real obsticle and a stock Jeep can easily navigate it. You will know once you reach it as the creek bed washed out the road and it was rebuilt with boulders that you will climb over. I entered from where the main Ranger Station is, once you reach the creek bed and climb the rocks watch for a trail on your left and drive up it... will save the suspense on what is there but it is well worth visiting....

Williard86 I just did a trip to the national park two weeks ago. My only regret is not staying in one place for more than a night. Pine canyon #4 and 5 are spectacular as is telephone canyon #2. We did black gap to river rd west and stayed off road for most of the day. Awesome day of driving. PM me if you have any questions.

Here's a link to some pictures if you're interested.

Rough Rider Weather should be perfect in March. Not to hot. Take plenty of liquids anyway. It is the desert.

See my previous post for trails. Your Jeep should be fine. A stock Jeep can do any trail in the National Park. The only real climbing is Black Gap.

There are always of other Jeepers you can hook up with if you do not want to go solo.

I am planning a trip to Big Bend Ranch State Park in May. Very primitive and the trails are spectacular. At the state park you have to carry in all your fuel, food and water. Details are posted on MyJeepForum.net.

Enjoy your trip.

klessa I'm considering a solo trek out to Big Bend this March. What is the weather like generally at that time of year? Can you provide any recommendations for trails/roads to tackle? I'm doing a combination photography fun and jeep riding trek, so want someplace scenic that will be fun to drive but not too extreme for my jeep that's only modded with a 3" lift kit and 32" tires.

Rough Rider Big Bend is enjoyable any time of the year. Old Ore Road is an excellent trail. Be sure to explore the side trails. River Road from Rio Grande Campground to Santa Eleana Canyon is an all day event. Be sure to detour to Black Gap. When we were there in November, a severe rain had washed out a lot of the trails - which made it more enjoyable. We partially rebuilt Black Gap, so enjoy.

Fuel is not an issue in the National Park. Gas is available at the campground, Panther Junction, and before Santa Eleana Canyon. The state park is another issue. We spent an entire day there and had enough fuel. If you spend more than one day, be sure to take fuel , food, and beer into the park. No fuel, and limited food is available at the state park.

Enjoy your trip.

Salty1 I am heading to BB over Christmas with the wife, any suggestions on what trails you enjoyed the most. Right now I was thinking Black Gap and Old Ore from what I have read. How was the fuel situation as I am wondering if I should be carrying some spare gas with me for use in the park.

Rough Rider Sorry I didn't get back to you. I left San Antonio Wednesday 10/3. We made the River Road run on Saturday. A Jeep similar to yours hooked up with us a few miles from Santa Eleana canyon. I was in a green TJ. Was that you? Will look forward to joining with you on future runs. Spend Thursday in Big Bend Ranch State Park. Absolutely A W E S O M E.

ChristmasMtn I live here in the Big Bend and just heard about your trip out here. I am interested in joining the group for Saturday's River Road drive. What time are you departing Rio Grand Village? Since the river recently flooded and closed down San Elena Canyon, have you gotten any advisories for the river road? Thanks and maybe I will see you Saturday!

Rough Rider
Big Bend National Park - Big Bend State Park

Several Jeep Nation jeeps will be in Big Bend next week. Any jeeper is more than welcome to join us. Most of the serious trails will be on Friday, Saturday, and early Sunday.

Big Bend is considered the high desert. Water and Shiner Bock are essential for hydration. Firearms are not necessary but will be present in the event of coyotes.

Current plans and activities are as follows:

Monday 10/1 - Beached Bum will arrive and set up camp in the Rio Grande Campground.
Tuesday 10/2 - Beached Bum (Shane) will scout new trails and activities.
Wednesday 10/3 - I will arrive in the afternoon and run several short trails with Shane until dark thirty. I will not camp but will be in a motel.
Thursday 10/4 - will spend the entire day in Big Bend State Park.
Friday 10/5 - Will run Tinaja Trail, Old Ore Road and any other trails we want to. JeepSlade (Ken) will arrive in the afternoon. Will run short trails until dark thirty.
Saturday 10/6 - Will run River Road from the Rio Grande Campground to Santa Eleana Canyon. Will detour thru Black Gap and the Mariscal Mines. This is approximately 60 miles and will require all day.
Sunday 10/7 - Will run a couple of trails early Sunday. Plan on departing around noon.

Stock jeeps are more than adequate for Big Bend. Most of the trails are old, remote mining roads. The only rock climbing is Black Gap. A stock jeep will make this climb.

Everyone talks about going to Big Bend and regrets not having done so. Come on out and join us. One thing is certain - we will have a good time.
