Bad Oil Leak with a Tick
I've had some what of an oil leak with this jeep since I got it 10 yrs ago. Just recently the oil leak looked like it was coming from a seal on the oil pan. Now I hear a tick and the oil is dripping a lot more. I think it might be coming from up high because it's dripping on the exhaust pipe and burning off. There is oil everywhere underneath. Any thoughts on this guys? Thanks

|ltj211||Would a ticking that gets louder and faster as you accelerate be the lifters? I checked in one of the manuals (from pep boys) and it said a ticking could be many things including a pinhole on/in about three things (including the piston) or it could be the piston hitting, and about 6 other things. Also, what do you make of the oil pressure spiking up (to off the guage) when idling and driving. It's only at normal pressure about half the time. I need a new Ideler motor (likes to rev and fall between 500-1000 RPM in neutral) and it will spike and fall alot as it does this.|

|daddyjeep||Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.Git R Done|

Well, actually, the engine comes with everything, EVERYTHING, but the alternator,ac pulley, powersteering and tensioner pulley ( sorry, spelling sucks )
So its a great deal.
I can just transfer all those accesory pulleys over, right?

|Angler1979||that sounds fair thats problibly just the long block, your going to have to change over all the external stuff like exaaust manifold, intake manifold, alt, Ext... when you do the motor swap its an exelent opertuinty to install a header!!!|

well, its at the shop right now, getting its final check.
We believe that the motor is taking a crap on me, and im looking into a new one.
I found a brand new from the factory motor, direct replacement for my jeep. for 1,500.
i think im going to go ahead and take it.
what do you all think?
|11-02-2006 12:03 PM|
|Angler1979||it is normal for oil pressure to rise during acceleration because the more RPMs you have the faster the Oil pump pumps creating more pressure, when you rev up the motor and the pressure gage stutters or even drops you have a bad oil pump, and the end is near unless you take action.|

|daddyjeep||Mine comes up a bit during acceleration, i don't know if this is a problem or not. Mine has been this way for years.|

|Wrangler93||does that oil pressure increase, mean anything?|
|11-01-2006 06:56 PM|
my oil pressure goes up to around 50. when im driving on the express way, and when i get off the expressway, it goes back down to 40. or wherever the middle is.

|Angler1979||pull the oil pan and check the conecting rods, is there any fluctioation in oil pressure during all rpm ranges?|

|timmy43410||The tick might have been the lifters...a knock could be something a whole lot worse. Pray its not coming from the bottom end inside your oilpan.|
|11-01-2006 10:32 AM|
well, i think its a knock now.
I took it into my shop class today, and we were looking at it, and it seems to be knocking, not ticking.
but, i can not find where it is coming from. i used a stethescope, and searched everywhere on the block.

The noise doesnt go away. at all.
Not even to the slightest imagination.
I started the jeep up, it was there, and fairly loud.
Then, i drove it around, got her nice and hot. And the noise got a little quieter, but was still there never the less.
So, you guys think its the lifters?

|94redwrangler||the donut is where the head pipe connects to the rest of the exhaust. or thats what i have always called it. it is a flat piece of metal with three nuts and bolts holding the two pieces together. sometimes they will rust and break or there might be a crack there.|
|10-31-2006 08:09 PM|
|amerijeep||I think he has a dozen donuts on his seat and they are ticking.|
|10-31-2006 07:56 PM|
if it is an exhaust leak. Should it go away really fast when it warms up, or will it just quiet.
When i first start it, its pretty loud, you can tell its there. But after a while, its like reallllly quiet. And im not sure, but i think its gone. But, it still might be there.

|Angler1979||by putting a header on your jeep it will allow it to move exaust gasses out of the cylinder head faster which will result in more horsepower, and tourqe the 4 banger needs all it can can get expecially when running larger tires.|
|10-31-2006 07:36 PM|
AND, sorry i forgot to post this, but. 94redwrangler. What do you mean, donut. you said two places you had the tick. donut and manifold. do you mean the donut tire?
|10-31-2006 07:34 PM|
i think it does actually go away slightly when the engine warms up.
it takes a while to go away, but i think it does. And, if it doesnt go away, its very..very very slight.
how do i check to see if it coming from the manifold?
and would putting headers on this car do anything? i have a 79 trans am as my fast muscle car, i do not need this jeep to be fast by any means haha, but any nice jump in power is appreciated.

|rebelBullDawg325||it's most likely an exhaust leak.... does it go away as the engine warms up?|
|10-31-2006 02:06 PM|
BUMP!! the exaust manifolds are famous for cracking, the only thing good about yours is if its a new head the nuts wont be rusted on the studs so it will be an easy swap to put in a header!

|94redwrangler||hey man i have a 94 wrangler. and on mine i had a horrible ticking sound and i found out that is was coming from two places the donut and at the manifold where it meets the head. from what i have been told is that the very last manifold bolt is very weak. and alot of them will break off. i have ordered a new header and cat back exhuast kit.and i am getting the bolt tapped out. i don't know if that helps but that is what it was on mine.|
|10-31-2006 11:10 AM|
|daddyjeep||You may also want to take a look at your exhaust manifold. A leak where the manifold meets the head will also make a ticking sound.|

|Dare2BSquare||Darn straight it can. A Jeep with a 4 banger is a capable 4 wheel vehicle. If you are going to be hardcore, you will need some mods.|

This may be a dumb question, but since its a 4cly. Can it do any sort of offroading?
|10-31-2006 10:26 AM|
has 88k, origanal. 3k on the new head.
