Wattapunk Next time on a cold start, pop the hood and listen to see if the noise is coming from the compressor or maybe the idler pulley. Spray some WD-40(just don't get it on the belt) at the behind the a/c pulley then idler pulley to see if the noise goes away.

Air conditioning growl

I have a 1998 Wrangler Sport. Last week, I had the A/C charged (the first time ever). Now, when I start the car, I am getting a loud deep growl and sometime a loud clank/banging noise when the A/C is turned on. This only happens when the car is cold and started for the first time. Once the car is warm and has been started and stopped, the A/C makes no noise and is working great. The car has never in 14 years made such a noise before I put the A/C on. Any ideas before I go back to the garage and yell at my mechanic ?
