kla95 ok guys, it wasnt the filter. I replaced it, took it out, and it continued to sputter. turned so bad that I could barely move. Limped into a driveway and got out. I looked under the jeep and the muffler was GLOWING CHERRY RED. obviously im burning fuel there. does this mean I've fouled a spark plug? bad injector? valve stuck open? Thanks for the ideas so far!

95YamJam Fuel pump issues can be the ecu as well. There are 3 caps in that sucker that go bad and need replaced. I was having cold start issues and it was getting really bad. Found a thread on here that linked to jeep forum. Replaced the 3 caps and no she runs better than ever.

Just keep it in mind. I almost spent big money on a new pump for mine.

Tyewilly Also, you can usually get a fuel pressure test kit from your local parts store through there loan a tool program. Then you can check your fuel pressure for a better idea of how your pump is working.

camarozz Could be anything you mention.

Pumps do not always fail completely, sometimes they do what you describe. I had a car that the inertia switch was malfunctioning and it ran like you describe.

Go with the cheap fix/checks first. Replace filter, check inertia switch, even check the fuel pump relay. Then I would consider replacing the pump after all that.

I have a 95 wranger and lately I have been noticing it has been cutting out, or sputtering. My first thought was I probably needed to replace the fuel filter. I haven't had time to change it so I have drove it anyways. I made the first half of my trip fine, no cutting out or problems at all. On my way home the Jeep completely died. I tried starting it and it would start then die out. Never ran for over a couple seconds before dieing. I fought this for 5 minutes before it FINALLY started again. My thought was if the pump went out or the injectors went bad it wouldn't have started back up at all. I know replacing the filter first makes the most sense (cheapest fix) but I was wondering if anyone has had this problem? What fixed it? Basically I am wondering if it should go straight to the shop first because I dont have a lot of time for trial and error fixing, but if that sounds like the fuel filter is the only logical problem, I will just do that myself.
