Has anyone managed To do this without taking the wheel, caliper, and drum off? Like, using the access hole in the back that's there for that purpose? I can get the rubber plug out (and in) no problem -- but I can't for the life of me find the star wheel with a screwdriver through the access hole.
From disassembled photos online, it looks like the star wheel is very low in the access hole. Would a brake spoon help? Do they have a bend that allow you to reach the star wheel?
Frustrating, guess I'll pull everything if I don't hear a positive answer to this.

Okay... completed the job. I put the rear axle on jack stands, removed both rear tires, and removed the brake calipers as shown in SilverSport's tutorial.
I cleaned the brake area with compressed air (cough, cough) and marked the star wheels original location. Then I expanded each side's shoes star wheel by 4 cogs; reinstalled the rotor/drum and tested brake handle movement. Once that was okay, I tested for rubbing.
It took me 45 minutes to complete the job but I was moving "tentatively" since I didn't know what to expect.

|mbu||Oh crap... One has to take the caliper off BEFORE one can get to the rubber plug... and an 18mm socket is needed - who keeps one of those! Sheesh... a simple task becomes a major one.|

It looks like this is the procedure for a vehicle that has rear drum brakes - how is this adjustment done with rear DISK brakes?
Just checked... there is a drum brake shoe (for the hand brake) within the rotor on the rear so this procedure does make sense!

So after all the reading and bitching about this I decided to adjust my parking brake on my day off this past Monday. I jacked the rig up, put jack stands down, removed the tires, removed the calipers, played with the 1973 non-self adjusting star wheel and got the shoes to slightly drag when fully released. I then had them lock at 3 clicks. I put one tire on and tried to turn the rear tire with all my might..... wouldn't budge. So I removed the tire and bolted everything back, jacked her up, removed the jack stands, put her back down, and tested in real life......
On flat ground, good. As soon as I have a slight hill....she rolls!!!! You know what???? F - You Jeep!!!! I am not taking it apart again!!

Silvers info is spot on but agree with all this. I tried to adjust mine and failed twice. Thinking new drums would do it... Nope. I got the pad to drag and backed off some . Put "everything" back together again. The brakes locked up. Try #2 ....... #3....... And 4 yielded the same results. I kept backing off the star and everything was good until out put everything back together, I gave up assuming my issue was maybe in the cable itself or brake itself.

great write up but to vent / rant a little bit .........
Why in God's name did Jeep make it so you have to take the damn caliper off the truck to adjust the parking brake. Amazing the OP doesn't make a note to this stupidity but rather praises Jeep's parking brake, which really doesn't need praise it's a design that has been around for say .....80 years!! However almost every manufacturer I know either makes the damn thing self adjusting by driving in reverse and slamming on the brakes or allows you to access the star wheel without taking the caliper off. Because of this dumb design you need to take the tire off too so you can't even test the thing properly without having this turn into an on / off exercise. So Jeep succeeded in turning a 5 minute brake adjustment into 35 / 40 minute chore. This I think is the single biggest reason why people leave their parking brake non-adjusted.
...anyway, nice write up

|kjeeper10||This was fairly simple, considering the original owner left the plugs out. Everything still worked and I was able to loosen the PB. Still working on getting the driver side rotor off. The passenger side pads looked good. I am going to replace the rotors once able to remove the other side. Clean up the internals and I should have no issues adjusting the brake to hold.|

|WXman||When you say counterclockwise and clockwise, are you talking looking from the rear of the Jeep toward the front? Or from the front looking rearward? Because depending on which side of the rear tires you crawl around to do this job, it could be either way.|

Right, thanks. It kind of lines up, as far as that goes. These star adjusters pretty much blow, IMHO. I will put the new ones on the same as yours. I'm not sure if they will adjust any easier, though.
Just to keep it simple when I adjust them from here on out.
Just wonder why they put them in such a bad spot, you know?

My 2007 has the star wheels at the top, not on the bottom like in your pics. I am currently swapping out my pads, and wonder if I should switch the new star wheels to the same position as yours?
