In REALLY cold weather like you get there in NH, I'd run 5W-30 in the coldest winter months. It'll help your engine start easier on those really cold mornings, and it will help the oil circulate much faster.
X4 (or whatever) on not running high octane gasoline. Octane is not power and higher grades of gas do not burn any cleaner... though some of the gasoline manufacturers love to keep those rumors alive.
An X-eleventy-billion on not running one of those VERY crappy K&N filters. They pass dirt and dust nearly as badly as a chain link fence does. Plus the OE paper element filter used in the TJ has such a large surface area that it is not restrictive to air flow like K&N and the aftermarket air intake manufacturers want us to believe it is.
Finally, just be gentle when cleaning the IAC's solenoid actuated plunger. Don't twist or push-pull on it at all. Make sure to clean the oriface in the throttle body it fits into as well.

Check the snorkel connections leading out of the air box and into the throttle body. Make sure they are tight. Also, remove the air filter and make sure your box is not cracked.
The IAC can simply be removed and cleaned using throttle body or carb cleaner. If you are experiencing a rough idle or the motor feels like it wants to stall after breaking, I'd suggest removing it and cleaning it out. If you are not haveing any issues, just leave well enough alone.
I would also suggest you go to NAPA and get yourself a Hayne's or Chilton's manual on your Jeep and keep it by the crapper...muti-tasking is key!
IMO - I would change the tranny and diffs at 50K miles if it's a DD and light service duty. If you are towing or running on fire-roads all the time, then 25K miles for those fluid changes.

I think i will skip the K&N filter. I just replaced a very dirty filter with a fram. Something is wrong though cause the filter box cover doesn't seem to seal very well. If I plug the "horn" with my hand I can here it leaking around the seal. I have re-installed it 5 times with the same results. I believe this is wrong because on another wrangler I tested there was alot of suction at the horn and if you plugged it with your hand it collapsed the rubber horn quickly and you could hear the motor slow down. I didn't do that for long of course maybe 2 seconds or shorter.
Yes in New England I have always been told to run 10W-30.
I also wish to take apart and clean the Idle Air Control Valve to try and solve a mildly rough idle. I just had the dealer put it on the computer and all o2 sensors and the cat are fine. The Jeep has 26,000 miles and I am having a hard time believing that the air control valve could already be gummed up but I guess you never know. How delicate is this thing anyways? I am very good at my own car stuff so I think I will be fine but any help here would be appreciated.
The previous owner was a gal who used it as a daily driver and she obviously took good care of it. I have seen the maintanence records and she made every interval for service. next thing is to get the 30,000 mile service which the dealer already told me he would discount for me since I bought the vehicle so close to that mark. And since I have done most of the stuff anyways it would only need the tranny flush, differentials and transfer case. He guesstimated about $200.
Has anyone found a cargo net that will mount behind the rear seat close to the rear tailgate that will provent stuff from falling out when you open the rear door and window? Iv'e looked everywhere for one. I guess i might have to try and make one???

The Owner's manual specifically states NOT to run higher octane gas than 87. I've had pinging issues in the past but I belive they are attributed to bad gas or condensation. A can or fuel injection cleaner every 6 months is my work around for the moisture issues due to the seasonal climate changes.
I've had the K&N and I'm not impressed. I've switched back to the Purolator paper type.
I run Quaker State 10-40. Up where you are, you might want to consider a lighter oil for winter applications. According to Ford (and I know this is a Jeep forum), their guidelines state that a new motor can "consume" 1 quart in 2,000 miles before they consider it for a warranty rebuild. Sometimes, the mechanical tolerances (when all parts are considered) can actually fall in the higher (larger tolerance) side and cause the engine to consume oil and the engine will run perfectly fine.

Fuel: Sometimes I get pinging with regular, usually fine. It depends on whether the gas is really 87 octane from the pump. I keep a bottle of fuel treatment handy if I get a bad tankfull.
Filter: I have the K+N, probably wouldn't do it again. Expensive with little or no benefit IMO
Oil: I use Walmart synthetic based on information from Rubicon Owners Forum. It fits the specs that the engine needs and isn't much more expensive than dino.Change every 5k.I also use a larger Hastings filter.
I would think radio and other electronics don't mix well with water

Higher octane fuel is for higher compression engines. It will reduce some knocking, especially in older engines that aren't computer controlled with a knock sensor that correct the timing to compensate. Essentially, higher octane is more expensive than any real gains you will get from a MPG or maintanance (plug life, etc) perspective.
Heavy rain without any top CAN destroy the radio (will it, is another question). Wet seats and carpet are a bigger worry as they will mold/mildew up, stink and wear out in no time. Plus, the tub may start to rust without you knowing. If you have a hard top, buy a bikini. If you have a soft top, fold it down so it's there to fold it up if the weather goes south.
I have a K&N filter. I like it. I've heard (on this site and from a couple of jeep'n buds) that they let a fair amount of dirt bypass. I haven't had that issue myself and I've been on some dusty a$$ runs. Maybe it's because I clean/re-oil after more often or something. I don't know. If I had a stock filter box, I don't think I'd bother to replace it though...
You're dealer is suspect to me. An engine won't "drink" one version of oil and not another. And while internal combustion engines have been around for awhile, the 4.0L I-6 used in TJ's are NOT anywhere close to 60 year old technology (more like 15)
But, to give you my opinion on motor oil, it depends on how you use/abuse your engine. Good synthetics are expensive but provide a higher degree of lubrication across a higher temperature range than oil. More important that the oil is a good filter and a better oil change schedule.

|Jma20a||for a drop in filter i have been told that the acdelco filter is the "best". i have seen a chart on the forum before showing the different air filters and how they preform. as for the radio as long as it doesn't get too wet, i usually have a rag or towel to toss over it to help keep it dry.|

No on higher octance.
No on the K&N- theres a chart around here somewhere that shows it does filter worth a shit.
I usually leave my top on but take the doors and windows off so that the cd player wont get wet.
I use regular oil and it hasn't let me down yet.

While the dash can handle getting wet I would not recommend leaving it out in a massive rain storm.
Higher rated gas might give you a mpg gain but it will be slight. Owners manual say 87 rated is just fine.
KN filter, some like them some don't.
Not sure on the oil debate. Had a buddy that used syn, never recall him having an issue. I just dump what ever in mine and all is well.

I just took posession of an "05 Wrangler TJ or it took posession of me......and I have some questions.
I've been told that higher octane fuel will run cleaner in any engine. Is there any benefit to running higher octane fuel in my 4.0?
Also heard that running a K&N air filter will help with gas mileage.
If I have my top off and it rains, will that destroy my radio/cd player? Its a stock one with the subwoofer.
I have read some of the threads here about synthetic oil. The dealer told me that he has tried synthetic in his '02 4.0 and it "drinks" it. he says he has to add a quart every month or so. I am a fan of synthetic oil and have used it for years. He is saying that the 4.0 was developed 60 + years ago and it "likes" dino oil so not recommnded to use synthetic.
