Jerry Bransford The TJ's 42RLE 4-speed auto has a very deep overdrive ratio so it does better with a lower than usual ratio. For 33" tires, I'd go with 4.88. Yep.

bpowa jerry I got 32'' right now and may go with 33 max in the future.. with a 4spd auto would going 4.56 be better than 4.88's this is mainly freeway driving and some offroading.. right now I am bogging at 1800-1900 on the freeway at 60-65.

Not at all. In fact, I run with 35" tires and 4.88 gearing and the highway and trail rpms are ideal with the 5-speed transmission. Having run that combination for years, I would run no other gear ratio for a Jeep with 35" tires that sees much road use in addition to trail use. If it were for offroad use only, I'd probably have gone with 5.13 gearing.

If you were to have the mindset of wanting to regear so your engine rpms were the same as they were when running the factory size tires, that would not work out well at all. You actually need higher engine rpms at the same speeds as you had with the smaller tires. This is because of the larger tire's increased weight and rolling resistance, its increased leverage against the drivetrain (its radius is longer giving it more leverage), plus the fact a lifted Jeep on taller tires is harder to push through the air due to its increased wind resistance.

For your 5-speed and 35" tires, you could not choose a better all-around ratio than 4.88 that absolutely will not give excessive highway rpms.

One more thing... did you realize the Jeep Rubicon comes right from the factory with 4.10 gearing for its 31" tires? Extrapolating that, you can then realize that 4.56 for 33" tires and 4.88 for 35" tires give about the same rpms and performance levels as how the factory ships the Rubicon.

I never would of thought to install 4.88's cuz if my memory serves me correctly on my previous 97 (5-speed) I had 33's with 4.10's and the combo was a touch steeper than stock. So you don't think highway speeds and daily driving would be a problem with 4.88's?

For 35" tires, you need deep gearing and if you have a manual tranny or 4-speed automatic, 4.88 is the way to go. Actually, if you have the 4-speed automatic, 5.13 is actually a better ratio due to the 4-speed auto's extremely high overdrive gear ratio.

Only if you have the 3-speed automatic used in 2002 and older TJs should you go with 4.56. 4.10 is out of the question to regear to for 35" tires, that ratio would be a real dog to drive with a tire as big as a 35".

JBravo41 My project is currently running 3.07's with 33's... ugh... My GPS shows about 6mph slow on the speedo at 55... ie 61 on the speedo and 55 on the GPS.

Along the same lines... would you guys suggest 4.10 or 4.56 for 35's? Mostly a pavement pounder for the wife with an occasional trail ride but nothing serious off road.

Darton my speedo with the 3:07's and 33's is not correct and it gets farther off the faster I drive

Jerry Bransford Since it doesn't appear you'll be installing your own ring & pinion gears, don't buy them on your own to give to the installing shop to install in an effort to save a little $$$. Instead, make sure the installer provides ALL of the parts. That way, if anything goes wrong after the installation, the installer's warranty will cover both parts and labor. If you provided him the parts, he'd blame the parts and make you take care of getting them replaced by the dealer you bought them from. Plus since he blamed the parts, he'd make you pay for his deinstall/reinstall labor again since he'll say it was the parts and not his labor that caused the problem... even though nine times out of ten it was an installation screw-up that causes problems.

Do research the prices for gears and the parts you could buy them for before agreeing to an installed price though. That will give you the ability to know if he's ripping you off on the parts pricing. Odds are he won't but.... and you can also ask him to give you a discount on the parts which installers often will since they really make most of their money on the install labor.

jpdocdave i'm guessing his 33's w/ 3.07's are not correct. 3.07 were stock, and that tire jump would be off, assuming he didn't correct w/ speedo gear already, which most don't.

so i'm thinking that jump in gears is gonna make his stock speedo pretty close.

rketr Assuming the 3.07's w/ 33's are currently correct, moving to 4.11's would be a decent jump. The <$15 bux for the speedo and 5 mins would be worth it.

erickpl Regearing does not necessarily mean changing the speedo. I went for 4.10 on 30's to 4.88 on 33's and my factory speedo is MORE accurate than it was before the gear swap. GPS verified.

jpdocdave if he goes from 3.07 gears to 4.11's with 33's will his speedo be pretty close?? i'm not sure but those gears might be correcting it pretty good maybe. i could be wrong, don't listen to the dyslexic jeep guy.

rketr I think the '05 still uses the speedo gear...

You'll wanna swap out your speedo gear too.

With 33's and 4.11's you'll need a 36 tooth speedo gear. Swing by your local Jeep dealer and ask for part number 52067636.

The install is very simple. Takes maybe 5 mins to include finding tools and cleaning up.

jpdocdave the carrier is what holds the spider gears, and the ring gear bolts to, and the axle shafts slide through. there's whats called a carrier break. so certain sizes have different carriers. yours is a smaller carrier than the one required for 4.10 gears.

jpdocdave nope, you need a new carrier to go up from 3.07. you need ring and pinion set obviously, you also need master install kit includes bearings and shims and seal and so on. also do outer wheel bearings while you're there. obviously got to regear both axles

not a do it yourself job for the averaged diy guy.

So i'm tired of the 3:07 gears in my Tj. What do I need to get to regear to say 4:11. All in need to buy is new ring and pinions for the front and back right??????
