CapeCodET I had the same problem so I decided to replace the pump as well since it's got 136,000 on it.

Just wanted to note that what takes 1.5 - 3 hours some places can take much longer if you've got a salt induced rusty undercarriage.

The four nuts in the back of the skid plate came right off. All three front ones just spun in place. I ended up having to drill holes in the floor to get to the heads of the bolts. Actually, only the center one had a hex head, the other two were carriage bolts that I had to drill out.

Have you checked out the Rock Auto link I gave above yet? OE is always best but when $$$ is low, you can get a decent replacement for $60-90 or so from Rock Auto. I have purchased at least three from them over the years. I think mine were usually made by Airtex. And of all the sources for parts I have used over the years, Rock Auto is #1 in my book for pricing and everything I need from a parts supplier.

Rock Auto lists it under Fuel Injection Pressure Regulator...

Jerry Bransford This problem is far more common in TJs than should be, that is for sure. Based on your symptom, it is easily fixed by replacing your fuel pressure regulator which sits outside of the gas tank on top of the fuel pump.

When the FPR leaks, it allows the fuel that is supposed to stay in the top-end of the engine (fuel rail that the fuel injectors plug into) for fast starts to instead drain back down into the gas tank. The extended crank time until the engine starts is how long it takes the fuel pump to get fuel back up to the engine. Turning your ignition switch on-off-on a few times to cycle the fuel pump before trying to start the engine will help shorten the start times until you can replace the FPR.

Once the fuel tank is dropped, it takes less than 5 minutes to swap the FPR which simply snaps in & out of the fuel pump. I'm holding a new FPR in the below pic, you can see the old FPR below on top of the gas tank.

RockAuto Auto Parts is a great source for them. Rock Auto's pricing and delivery times are hard to beat.

brandon-99tj Yup need a new fuel pressure regulator. I havent had time to change mine yet. You have to drop the gas tank and i believe the fpr sits right on top of the fuel pump....could be wrong on that but i know its right on top. Spose to be an easy install after you get the tank down.

do i need a new regulator or how exactly do i fix this?

brandon-99tj Try turning the key from off to on (without starting it) 3or 4 time then start it. If this works it is probably you fuel pressure regulator.

chodge40 I usually have to turn key and let the engine light turn off then crank and it should turn right over!

TJ not starting good

when i go out to start my jeep i usually have to just let it crank a time or two it seems as if its not getting spark but it has new plugs in it. i was told by a mechanic it wasnt the starter, so can someone help me with this problem??
