duffer The T90C towers have that cast on them but since those interchange directly with the T90A towers, it isn't a fail safe identification and the only sure way is to count the teeth on the input-should be 16 tooth for the "C". The case will still have T90A cast into it, even if it is a "C". You might be able to count the difference in low gear revolutions-3.34 versus 2.79:1 for T90C and T90A respectively, but that will no doubt take two people and close attention.

div4gold Hey Duffer, I still haven't laid hands on the 3B yet. Maybe in a couple of days. I've been reading about the T90 transmissions. I know that they were supposed to go to the T90-C in '64 but from the outside there isn't any real way to identify the transmission unless you take the top off and count some gear teeth. Is that the way it is? I know the transmission was supposed to be rebuilt but I don't know what may have been put back in it. More than likely the T90-C but I was wondering if there is any way to identify it from the outside? Thanks Howard

Novack's kit just makes the T90C into a T90A so you can use the T90J input shaft. You might look around to see if you can find a complete T90J someplace which would directly bolt to the long adapter. The 6 cylinder wagons, pickups, and FC170's all used them. The FC version is side shift, but all you would need to do is use your existing tower and plug the side shift shaft openings.

Your 3B no doubt has the 4.27 axle gears unless someone changed them out and those may be a bit taller than what you want if you go to the T90A. But think I would just put it together and drive it to see how it fits with your use. With the 4.3, it will not be as critical as it would be with the Fhead and you can always change the gears later, or put a set of TeraLow 3.15's in the transfer case.

As for the 4.3, it really would be worth the effort to find a TBI version. Injection is absolutely the best if you do much off-road and you will usually get better mileage.

yes, if stock, the 64 should have the T90C with the more desirable 3.34:1 first gear. The downside is that you will need to use the short adapter plate (between bell housing and transmission) which probably will require moving the trans/transfer forward (requires modifying both driveshafts) or modifing the firewall to accomodate the distributor. With the T90A you can use the T90J long input with the long adapter and everything fits without firewall or drivetrain mods. A T90J version was never offered with the 3.34 first gear.

The 4.3 will make an excellent transplant. I would use one of the stock Chevy aluminum bells which saves about 25 lbs over the cast iron and they are more than up to the task. If the stock starter (Chevy) is too tight a fit for the front driveshaft, just use one of the many mini gear drives.

harleydragon I have made them many times using either 1 inch or 1 1/4 inch pipe and welding flat washers on each end

div4gold Thanks Duffer, you are full of information, I'm going to be asking you about some more information . My plan is to put a 4.3 Chevy V6 in it. From what I've read the transmission is a T90-C so if that is correct I can use that for the adapter from the motor to the transmission. I was also wondering about the Bell Housing and flywheel if anything I need to know about what to get there? It kind of looks like the 350 and the 4.3 use the same stuff. I'd like to know for sure though before I buy anything. This is going to be fun Don't go away PLEASE!

duffer Congrats on the 3B. Yes, usually need to make your own spacers. Some people use hocky pucks, but I just used 2" diameter urethane rod from McMaster-Carr. While I cut and drilled mine in a lathe, you can make them nicely using a chop saw/miter box and a drill. A 1" body lift and 2.5" spring lift will barely fit 33's-still a bit of rub on the corners of the rear wheel wells unless you space the bump stops down.

Body Lift?

So I just made a deal on a CJ3B, 1964 Model, stock except for an overdrive and 11 inch brakes. It will fill in where I don't want to take the LJ. Anyway I wanted to put some taller tires on it and looked around for a body lift. Couldn't find anything for something that old. Does one just make their own spacers?
