TnDz TJ I have to agree... Carrier bearing is wiped out. I would change both, keeping shims in correct location( left and right sides) as stated above

mike481 Looks like carrier bearing parts with all the slop in the video. The important thing to note if you replace the bearings is to be 100% sure the shims are back in the same places. You might be able to find a shop that will pull your old bearings and press new ones on for you pretty cheap if you just bring them the complete carrier.

This isn't a guaranteed fix without doing a complete rebuild but it should get you by.

wwch99tj The axle bearings are in the tube on the 35


The carrier bearings have the same type of needle bearings in them and with as much slop you have in the carrier, you've lost a few

jksport12 They look to be roller bearings from the axle bearing. Axle bearings aren't too bad. Pretty simple. Just need to have a shop press them back on the axle. Just make sure when you pull the retaining pin out of the diff gears you don't spin the wheels. The guts of the diff will fall out. Then its a mess to get it all shimmed back up.

It took me a couple hours start to finish. No previous experience.

I made sure the bearing caps were mark and the shims that were on each side got put back in the same position.

Its been over 12k miles with no noise

Death of my dana 35 (video) ... help?

i let off the clutch one day this week and heard a loud grinding noise and knew it was my differential. i finally got a chance to look at it today, i popped the cover off and a normal amount of fluid came out and everything looked fine until i started pulling metal bead looking things out from the bottom of the dif(probably about 15 of them or so) also the cover has marks on it from where you can see the gears hit it.ive never opened the axle before so it was all new to me but the video shows a lot of how screwed it is. so anyway i guess now i will start researching ford 8.8 unless somebody has good news on this and says its under 300 for parts and is do able at a basic/intermidiate mechanical level. i bought a 95 so i have time to play with this i just heard axle work is no joke. maybe someone can tell me otherwise though...
