What everyone else said! I would add that you will not see any MPH gains with the 2.5L. I have a 97 2.5L with the 5 speed manual and my friend has an 2004 4.0 LJ with the 6 speed manual. We drive similarly and can spend a day out on the trail together driving all the same places. At the end of the day he always puts less gas in the tank than I do. My 4 banger simply has to work harder to keep up and therefore burns more gas. I often wish I had more power on the highway, or in sand and deep snow, but on the trail it does perform like a champ.
In short, don't buy one thinking you will save gas money.

The 4.0 - manual or auto w/right axle ratio.
I have the flat-lander axle ratios with my auto and it can't get started
from a light nor maintain speed on hilly roads in Colorado.

|jimwww||2.5 if you never want to modify it and don't care about power. 4.0L if you want to run bigger tires and feel like it is a small v8 when you accelerate and care about resale value.|

|dixau11||I have a 2.5 with 33" and it's a dog on the interstate... Tops at 70 to the floor in 4 th.. 5th won't push it... You eliminate 4th.. Go with the 6.. I plan on getting a hemi eventually.. Or 4bt cummins|

Just picked up a 03 with 4.0.. First thing I did was hit the hill that takes me out of town and I am still smiling.. So glad I listen to everyone on the forum about selling the 2.5 instead of dumping a bunch of money in it.. It is unreal the power of a 4.0 to a 2.5. I new it would be better, but never thought there could be that much difference between the two.. 4.0 is the only way to go..

|wmdavis007||To me it was hands down a 4.0L, never even considered the 2.5L. Had to be a TJ...had to be a 4.0L. The cost is a little higher but so is the resale (if you don't plan to keep it until the rapture). No MPG gain, less power and about a grand cheaper...not for me. If it's about money, save a little longer and get a 4.0L, maybe even save more to hold out for a Rubicon or find one with a Dana 44 rear axle. (Don't forget about other options too like a hardtop, full doors, AC, cruise...some people don't think of these when getting a Jeep until they already laid out the cash. But a lot of folks that drive Jeeps don't care and like the minimalistic Jeeps. I just wish mine had cruise for my summer treks to Myrtle Beach.)|

|tallzdatank||same price, or less than 20% more? get the 4.0. if its gonna be ridiculous, as many 4.0 jeeps are, get a 2.5. they're good tough never say die engines, unlike the 2.4.|

I've come to realize its not a matter of preference of engine or power. Every single person on here would prefer the 4.0 over the 2.5 or 2.4 including myself. The real difference is budget! They both end up getting close to the same gas mileage so that really has no bearing on purchasing decisions. Seems like there's generally a premium of $1000-2000 for the 4.0. That's a lot of extra money to some people when purchasing.

|03 TJX||If you're going to get a 4 cylinder get the good one, the 2.4 from 2003 to 2006, very good engine. And if you're going to be picky about it get the good transmission - the 5 speed from 2003 to 2004. Six speeds is gear clutter on both the 2.4 and 4.0.|

|89quest||I have a 89 2.5L TBI 5/spd with 33x12.50x15 tires. If you are not going to do anything but stock, go with the 6 cylinder.I wish I had found this forum before I bought.To get up a long not to steep incline I have to baet the tar out of my little baby in third gear to maintain 40 mph+.Now my options are regearing and the costs are not in MY budget anytime soon.Do yourself a favor and just get the six, you will be much happier.Oh by the way gas mileage SUCKS when you have to drive anything hard, to maintain highway speed.|

When I decided to buy my first Jeep I shopped for a four cylinder manual.
I wanted the best mileage I could get from a Jeep Wrangler and I heard to many nightmare stories about 13/15 MPG with the six.
The more I read threads like this Iím glad I found a 2.4 six speed .
Now when I have to change the timing belt I might be sorry.

i just went threw the decision process and passed on a 98 2.5 se no options half doors that was actually in slightly better overall condition but opted for a 99 4.0 sport with dual tops and full doors sound bar tilt cruise newer bfg tires and it was less money.
The 2.5 just flat disapointed me on the test drives so i knew I would never be happy with it.

|Southerner||I Have a lil' old 2.5. Ive taken it down the highway. Was is a race car? No. Did it get me where I was going? Yes. Most of my driving doesn't get over 40mph so for me the 2.5 works fine.|

My '97 is a 2.5 rolling on 31's. It hasn't got much pick-up, but I can keep up with highway traffic without having to work the engine any harder than any other car or truck out there. Off-road, it performs as you'd expect from a Jeep. The toughest thing I've gone through are muddy trails and deep ruts. It's my daily driver, so I don't have it lifted or heavily modified.
Now, the 4.0 is an I-6, which is the most efficient design possible for maximizing your torque output. In fact, all Class A trucks have I-6 engines because no other design can beat it. Do you need a 4.0 Jeep on the highway? Not by itself, no. But if you're planning on pulling a boat, rock-crawling or mud bogging regularly, the 4.0 will be the better choice.

|swampbuggy98||I've got a 98 with 125k on her with a 2.5 and she gets it down the interstate with no problems and with the 4.11's in the back she'll crawl out of anything in 4L without lookin twice.|
