Katalst The frame, engine, hood and grill are original. The diamond plate is aluminum. I am really not sure of the weight but I am also curious. Once I get it set up, I will try some SLOW country roads for the testing. I realize that this is just a short term solution but if it might work, then I would only have a little bit invested in the change so thought it might be worth a try.

Really curious as to what it does weigh. Still guessing 2500-3000 someplace with all the square tube and the cage. The Sport is probably around 3900 lbs so stopping quickly will be an issue. I used a 1T dually when I was flat towing my flatty and the weight difference there was large enough that you barely knew the Jeep was back there.

Custom frame?

4Jeepn When flat towing.. stopping and panic stops become the issue. Just give yourself plenty of room.

Katalst The vehicle to be towed is/was a 1959 CJ but was heavily modified before I got it. Really only original parts are motor, axles, grill and hood. No windshield and entire hub was replaced with custom made aluminum. I don't think it weighs a whole lot (a relative term). But I will let you know how it does. May be a month or so before I get a chance as I will still need to work out the tow bar. Thanks to everyone for the information.

If you keep the revs up, the 3.6 has enough poop to get the job done. You'll probably have to run in a lower gear to keep those revs up but you can do it. Mileage will stink and you won't win any races but you can get down the road. I'd keep an eye on the brakes if you do it very often, just making sure they're in good condition. But it can work.

There is no need to lock the front hubs you don't what the front driveshaft to turn.

derf If you google flat towing with a Spicer 18 t-case, that's exactly what they suggest. Trans in gear, t-case in neutral.

Flat towing a 1959

I have a 1959 willy. I also have a 2012 2 door sport. There is an off road park 70 miles from my house. I would like to tow the 59 there with the 2012. I have heard everything from no problem to it will cause the destruction of all mankind () and everything in between. Any good information would be helpful. So far, based upon what I believe it good information I am leaning toward doing it like this:

Transfer case in neutral
tranny in gear
(which is what manual says for new jeeps)

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
