Took me about 3 hrs to get to Shoe Creek, we camped on the trail last Feb. it snowed a little, there are other trails near there off the BRP, Big Levels, Crabtree Falls, etc.

Trail head starts out as a dirt road, few houses along the road, it follows the creek with a couple of creek crossings
When you headin' up that way, I may be interested in a few weeks...

Shoe Creek is north of Lynchburg in GWNF; take US29 N to just north of Amherst and then back roads to trail head

I've heard of Potts Mt. From Roanoke, you take VA 311 north off I-81 up to New Castle, then a few back roads to trail head. There was a forest fire there back in the spring not sure if it's still open, best to call Jefferson NF ranger office for up to date info. Where you located, I'm in Winston Salem. Have you been to Shoe Creek, VA? Pretty cool place to wheel/camp.
