mcgyver1467 Its a return line to the tank. Helps fuel to bypass the carb when the bowl is full. So that some extra pressure from the pump returns fuel to the tank and not forced by the needle valve into the bowl.

Cj7otr The hard line under the drivers side goes to the fuel tank. And the other two are like you said, pump and carb.

Outlawmack I replaced the coil and wires, rewired the electric choke (it was wired off the coil) , put an air cleaner on it and turned up the idle a hair. Starts easier and runs great ( the 10 miles I drove it) Still going to replace the plugs and wires And my fuel filter has a fuel return on it ? Comes off the pump into the filter then on the other side it goes to the carb and to a hard line on the drivers side Why is this?

Ditto to all three...

yellowsnow I would start with a carb rebuild. That is the most common cause of running rich. It may just need a cleaning, like the needle jet is sticking partially open. That would cause problems 1 and 2. Easy way to check is pull a spark plug. Black and sooty means running rich.

Few problems with my cj

Hey everyone. I just bought a 80 cj7 with a 4.2 automatic Saturday. On my way home (45 miles) I noticed a strong smell like it was running really rich, It doesn't have an air filter on it so I'm thinking that can be part of that problem, along with a carb adjustment.

2nd thing about 5 miles from home it started loosing power and almost stalled out. If I put it in neutral it would rev fine, but in gear it would bog down and die. Did this twice and after sitting for a few minutes it would start back up and run fine for a few miles. --- I found an accel coil with the wires just wrapped around the post bearly attached. I plan to move the coil to a better location and replace those wires and put on connectors so I can hook it up the right way

3rd thing. When accelerating from a stop it would shutter/vibrate, almost like it had bad axle wrap. so I had to let off and slowly speed up it would be ok.

Any ideas on these 3 problems do far?
Thanks for any help
