You'll have to join us at the Badlands one of these days. IndyORV has a solid presence in the Chicago area.
As for what you should do, I realize that the first thing 99% of new Jeep owners want to do is "lift it." That's the normal thing to do and it's understandable. But it doesn't help you and it's really money not well spent. As a fellow Purdue grad, I'd hope you recognize that building from the ground up is the smart thing to do. That means addressing the weak and vulnerable areas first.
Stock tie rod--replace with V8 ZJ tie rod
Oil pan skid
Steering box skid
Those are the three most vulnerable areas that should be addressed first. Next, the older model TJ gas tank skids are flimsy and not worth their weight in crap. The stock belly skid hangs down about 4" from the frame, robbing you of valuable belly clearance. Replacing those before raising the suspension would be a very wise move. I could go on and on but knocking out those items first would really give you a capable rig where it counts and would maintain the excellent OE suspension geometry. I suggest keeping the rig stock, coming to wheel with us at the Badlands, and I'll put you on obstacles that can highlight why you need to address each and every one of those items.

Good Jeep people also!! be about a 3-4 hour trip for you though...but if you combined it with a wheeling trip over this way up to Bundy Hill recreation area in Mi...meet more Jeep people abd have somebody to get parts at the same time.....|

|tallzdatank||fir parts online, ive used quadratec and 4wd.com both with good results for service and prices, I get four wheeler and petersons four wheel and off road, they've got some good ideas on products, build ideas, and sometimes even trails near you. but then again so does the community on here.|

|Jeembro||Join a local jeep club or offroad club and they'll show you the ropes. That's what I did. Also google is your friend when it comes to best deals on parts online|

|Gunner||Get a good tire pressure gauge. Go with your buddy to the Dunes. Air down and enjoy. Go out a few times and really see what you need first. I agree have all the maint items done first then start mods. Nothing worse than a busted U Joint due to being dry. Once you really find out just how much your jeep can do stock you will quickly find out what is going to work best for you.|

|PDXJeeper||A 2.5-3" lift with a 1.25 BL/MML would be a cost effective way to achieve 33" clearance. I have a K&N intake(PO) and wish i had the stock box and tubing. Spending money on a fancy muffler that is going to be abused sounds silly to me. A good suspension set up and sway bar disco is a must, you will need recovery points before you go out too. Do you know your current gear ratio?|

|tallzdatank||also, get protection. skid plates rock guards etc. nothing will ruin your good time faster than an oil plan hole, or a punctured gas tank. I mean really that'll screw you up|

|tallzdatank||if I had it to do over again, id do a winch before a lift. mine was lifted when I bought it, but still, get recovery gear. be able to get yourself out of trouble, before you buy anything that will get you in deeper, and a lift will do just that.|

Any suggestions....don't wanna sound like a broken record on this thing
So I just got a job out of college and just bought my first Wrangler, it's a 2000 Sahara. It's pretty much all stock for the time being. I want to put a lift on it (2" or 3", nothing too big) and some 33s, maybe an intake and exhaust system before I get into changing the gearing or anything else. I'd like to start getting into off-roading but have no idea where to start, I'm not going to be able to do it a ton since I live in Chicago and my work schedule is ridiculous for the next couple months. Any comments or suggestions on where I should start and/or what I should start with would be awesome!
Also, any places near the Chicagoland area that are good to go or start out at? I have a buddy that goes up to Silver Lake a couple times a year but that's pretty much the only place he goes so that's going to be one destination I try at least once.
