DevilDogDoc Mine rattled on shutdown since I had bought it and I accidentally discovered it was the cat. It smogged just fine a few months before I replaced it but when it was cut out all the catalyst material fell out in chunks. Never threw a mil though..,

Jeembro The reason I ask, when I had bad O2 censors, it was causing my catalytic converter to throw codes and act funky. I got them replaced (they aren't covered under the warranty) and it fixed everything.

Good to know.

Not sure if you meant me but I haven't replaced the sensors as it passed smog with flying colors. The PO may have but I haven't checked into it. I've thought about replacing them due to crappy mileage, but when the smog guy is surprised at how well it did I figured that's not the cause.

Catalytic Converter Replacement in California

1999 Jeep Wrangler SE (2.5L I4)

So about three months ago, my Catalytic Converter started making a rattling sound. At first i thought maybe it was just hitting something, but i checked and it was far away from any other metal surfaces. I searched online and i believe my catalytic converter is giving out. My problem is that I live in California. As most of you know, California is incredibly anal about these things, as most catalytic converters are 49 state only. My question is, what are my choices here? I don't want to go to the dealership and pay closer to $1000 because I'm a college student and I don't have those funds. Should I just buy an aftermarket cat and hope they don't check visually on the inspection? I know they will though. I'm at a stand still here; luckily, smog isn't due for another 6 months, but I'm trying to plan ahead. My preference is under $300. Any opinions would be great. Also, hows the install on catalytic converters?
