|mehbohdi||Am I to understand (After reading almost all of this thread), that your are creating a kit that will be for sale or just the knowledge to put this all together? Or a little of both. I,m more of the opinion, buy a donor vehicle and start from there. The COTY kit seems like a lot $$. I can buy alot of gas for $5-6000. Don't get me wrong I like diesels, I drive a Dodge Cummins P/U every day. I'm just saying. Great write up, thanks for taking time to post all this info.|

SIDEBAR: I HIGHLY RECOMMEND VW instructional course by Automotive Training Group. Although designed for site instruction, the text and DVD can be bought from them. Another tool that was invaluable (and a great diagnostic tool anyway) is the 16-pin datalink connector breakout box.
The whole Jeep is getting a pretty radical transformation.

You have mentioned doing a conversion on a 2.0L TDI as well? This is what I am looking at putting in my 1999 TJ. I am hoping to find the same type of engine thats in my 2009 VW TDI jetta. Have you been looking to do a 20. swap as well?

So yeah, when you're ready, I'm hoping to have my original Green Jeep fitted with the new engine, conversion system, and other details that'll make it viable and proof the concept.
In respect to reliability, the c engine is not some radical departure for diesel technology; nothing about it is revolutionary outside of popularity and sales. The fuel injection system is Bosch "common rail", using a high pressure pump, pressure accumulating vessel "rail", and piezo-injectors for multiple shots of fuel. Iron block, aluminum head, steel innards, giant EGR cooler...Duramax is not much different (or Cummins for that matter). It's quieter than the 1.9, with a strong bottom end. Pound for pound, these TDI's are the most powerful small diesels you can get.

What do you dislike about the BEW? Isn't it the only engine that will work in the TJ with the kit?
I have been completely swamped taking care of my first baby. She gave me a short break today and I figured I'd see what was up on the forum. Just wanted to say than you for replying to my many previous questions. I still really want to get into this conversion but am going to have to put it off for a year at least. Gives me the chance to fully research it. Hope you post even more details about your TJ soon!

Performance is comparable with a 4.0 five-speed stock TJ.

The first TJ was a stock SE 2000. It used the AX5, 21 spline NP231 syo. It has traveled over 8k miles, most of it being driven hard, with no drivetrain failures.
Although this setup has been trouble free, the AX5 is still a light duty transmission that is less robust than the 15 or later TJ manual transmissions. Therefore, I avoid the AX5 for future conversions.
I have no intention of using the BEW/BRM engine again unless it's requested specifically; good rule of thumb is 8-15k for the TJ, 3k for the engine, 3k for the conversion hardware, and labor.

|1979WagoneerLTD||I forgot that someone awhile back asked about the seats. The stock Sport seats were shot, so I went with the BesTop buckets that look similar to stock. They're ok for casual driving but don't offer much bolstering. The fabric, however, is tough and cleans easily.|
