Thanks man!
Ran into a ton of speed bumps but overall I feel pretty good about it. My dad keeps on giving it weird looks with all of the dirt, paint chips, etc. but I think he will get over it.

KILRIK The problem on the driver side door is that there probably isn't a mechanism. Lock on the inside just spins when you push it. The passenger side you can move the lever from unlocked to locked fine. I may give that a try though now that you mention it and see if that would make the locks work. Only reason I need them to work is for insurance purposes.

I looked more at the suspension today in person and I'm thinking that this is just a leveling spacer and not a budget boost spacer (couldn't find a spacer in the rear). Could someone confirm?

Loaded the soft top into the back of my mothers van so I'll have to pull that out sometime tomorrow and clean it off. It looks like a mess. I'll try and get pictures of everything tomorrow.

Once I got it home, I did notice that the doors WILL NOT lock. The driver side door won't lock from the inside or outside and the passenger side door will only lock from the inside. I'm not sure if it's the mechanism itself or if these are doors off another Jeep that were not made to work with the current key. My parents aren't too thrilled about this but I told them that as long as I kept it clean, I rather have someone open the door and look around then slash thing windows and have to deal with that.

How much would it run me to get the doors fixed to work with my current key?

Also, the bedlining of the tub was poorly rolled on. It looks like they did it AFTER they installed the Tuffy console so the whole bottom of the console is yellow if you open it up. Hopefully if I have time this summer, that can be one of my projects to put a new coat on. Would this be a bad idea to put a coat on top of what's already there?

Other than those things above and the leaks, it looks good. A few scrapes and dents but what Jeep doesn't?

Glad to hear you got it, congrats.
I had problems with one of my door locks and a quick cleaning and lubing of the inner mechanism worked wonders.

Good luck with the Jeep!

mhills16 the guy finally got attitude because like me reading he was annoyed to the max with all the newb questions and so on lol. but we all have to learn
12-06-2012 10:26 PM
mhills16 i would have bought it the day i saw it and would have gotten $10,500 within 3 days here at Ft Campbell.
12-06-2012 10:25 PM
mhills16 wow..i was getting annoyed reading this whole thread lol.. bottom line, I like most here am very experienced with jeeps, and i buy and sell them alot. That is a $10500 jeep all day AS IS with or without the title/carfax history. a big majority of TJ's locks dont work. Most jeep owners do not lock their doors, why would you waste money fixing a lock for your door? all they have to do is cut/rip your soft top or unzip your rear. So, if you like replacing soft tops, get your locks fixed, or just leave it unlocked and keep valuables out of it. just my 2 cents.

Yeah, I've pretty much written a chapter of a book with all of these posts.

I'll try and post pictures when I get back if it isn't too dark.
I'll probably start a build thread soon on small modifications I'll be doing. I'll be strapped for cash paying it off/buying parts and saving for school but it'll make a fun project.

KILRIK Ok....
Talked to the mechanic at the Ford Shop.
He said everything looks good. Tires just need to be balanced and it'll be fine.
As for the leaks, he said they are very small and I could get away with driving it as long as I check all of the oil levels every once and a while. If I go ahead and get the seals fixed, I won't have to worry. He said all the seals were just basic seal fixes.

He did say that it has been regeared, he didn't open up the axle to find out (more of a fee for us) but he said it felt like 5.13 or MAYBE 4.88.

He said to fix the steering wheel I would just have to have it realigned. It was driving straight and was aligned except for the steering wheel being set. It was a little pricey there so I'll find somewhere local that can do it.

Rear brakes are still hard and he told us that with that big of tires and that high of lift, it'll be like that. He said the rear brakes were drum so I'll upgrade to a big brake kit hopefully soon when I have the money.

Other than the small leaks, he said it's a well put together Jeep. He sounded like if we didn't buy it that he probably would.

We're going over to pick it up tomorrow afternoon. Can't wait!

Only thing is that I would probably never get this amount of upgrades. Especially if I did all the work myself. I would never have the funds to put in an Atlas as well as some of the other things that have been done to it.
It's over at the Ford shop as I write this so the whole deal is riding on what they find.

The ball is in the guy's court now. We called the Ford shop and had a ticket made out so ANY mechanic can check it out. All he has to do is get it over there and we have a deal. Just want to make sure the frame isn't bent. He said $7,600 is his BOTTOM number even if it does have problems.

Hopefully we work something out...

Sucks that things are happening like that but if it were me I would have already bought it. Everything you just named that's wrong isn't hard to fix. It's a heck of a deal and has some quality parts. But that's just my .02

KILRIK Did some searching and found a shop just outside of Parsons that said they could look over the body, frame etc but they don't do mechanical stuff and said they allow the local Ford Dealership/Shop to do all of their mechanical work. We gave the Ford place a call, worked out a time and everything and the owner said he would take the Jeep over there on Monday. Hopefully everything checks out and I'll be a fellow Jeeper soon!

KILRIK I have the ad bookmarked. Here's the description:

Countless hours and dollars have been spent on this rig! Turns heads everwhere you go! Hard top and soft top are included. Only 83,000 miles. Asking $8500 obo thanks Trades considered
Well, We've been going back and forth with the guy all day today on when we could pick it up/have him bring it to my mechanic. After we had exchanged phone calls and text messages, we finally gain some ground. He doesn't have it insured so he doesn't want to drive it all the way to us, nor have us pick it up (even though we would be covered driving it). He said if we were to pick it up and take it to our mechanic, he would have to come with us. Jeep doesn't go anywhere without him if we take it.

Now we're trying to locate a mechanic in Parsons, TN that we can trust and not one that he recommends (to avoid any hand shaking going on). If anyone knows of a Shop in Parsons/Lexington that is a good reputable mechanic, let me know ASAP. I think I may have found a place so we're going to give them a call tomorrow and see if we can have it checked out (it's in Lexington but that's close enough) tomorrow and hopefully come to a deal.
Here's the link to the place I'm talking about:

The ad indicates it has a rebuilt title, so I'd assume the owner added that later?

From my observations pricing these, the rebuilt title will drive the price down - irrespective of cause. This should be a consideration if you plan to resell it at any point in the near future. A theft recovery is generally favorable to a wreck, unless the thief went wild and stripped everything/damaged parts in the process. All pricing guides are dependent on a clean title, so salvage drops valuation below the least favorable price - usually private party fair/poor condition.

All that said, KBB (for one) quotes Fair in the 8's, and this one has some quality upgrades. Again, if you plan to resell, the buyer will likely expect a good discount over a clear title vehicle, even if yours is cleaner.

Best of luck in getting the information you need.

KILRIK Haven't bought it yet. Trying to contact the guy to meet and pick it up tomorrow and take it to my mechanic. Hopefully he will reply in time tomorrow for me to go and pick it up.

He may have just deleted one of the ads because he still has the ad under my city up.
11-28-2012 11:17 PM

Lift actually goes for around $2,600 (still need to identify the kit though) and the winch I believe goes for $1,200. You're probably right on the rims and tires though.

I guess I won't try and haggle with him. If something does come up during the inspection, I may try and talk him down just a bit.

Never said I wouldn't buy it. Now that I have cleared everything with my insurance, found out that I CAN register it, I'm comepltely fine with buying it. I just want to have my mechanic look it over to make me feel better.
I'm thinking that $7,800 is a fair deal seeing how with all the upgrades on it + the price of the Jeep would go for around $14,000 or so with a clean title.
I remembered someone telling me that they had picked up a rebuilt bone stock that drove fine for like $5,000. With all the stuff on this Jeep I think it's a fair deal. If anything pops up during the inspection, I may talk him down a couple hundred depending on the problem.

He seriously said he didn't know it was a rebuilt. He hardly even knows anything about the Jeep. If some problems pop up, I may try and talk him down some. We agreed on $7,800 after I talked him down when I went to check it out but that was when it had a clean title, now it doesn't...

KILRIK Question still stands, if it everything checks out should I go through with the $7,800 we agreed on or try and haggle with him because of the rebuilt title? I'm thinking the price is pretty fair for what it is, what do you guys think?
11-27-2012 08:34 PM
KILRIK Gave the capital a call and they told me that I personally do not have to keep any records other than what I personally have done to it. All records from previous owners have to be pulled by my insurance from the state. I went ahead and called my insurance back and a different agent backed that up. He also said that the first agent we talked to was right, there is a 4" max height for lifted vehicles so I'll have to keep an eye on that if I want to be insured (also if I want to fit the thing in my garage for that matter).

Trying to work out something with the guy to have him drop it by my mechanic Friday morning to have it looked over.

If everything looks good, is that a good price? He sounded pretty firm on the $7,800 so I may just leave it alone. What do you guys think?
