dylan1991 Thanks to both of you for the info. I think I'm starting to sorta figure out what's what.

I do have a quick qustion about Ford 8.8's. I've read in different places that the axles off of an F150 will fit and won't fit a Jeep.

The reason I ask is because the company I work for has a fleet of Ford vehicles. We have five 2005 F150's at my office. After a vehicle reaches 100K miles it's retired and replaced with a brand new pickup. Chances are I could get one of these F150's fairly cheap, grab the axles, and part out the rest of it. I might could even possibly convinve them to just let me buy the axles off of it.

So I guess first, does a 2005 F150 even have an 8.8 aaxle on it?

If so, is that 8.8 compatable with a Jeep?

What he writes "axles," he is actually talking about "axle shafts." It is common to just refer to the axle shafts as "axles" for brevity's sake. There are a ton of "super 35" kits on the market that include upgraded stronger axles shafts along with a locker to strengthen your Dana 35 while also making your Jeep more capable with the locker's assistance. This is what many people running Dana 35's will do. That being said, there are also many people that will tell you not to waste any time or money building up your Dana 35. These people will typicallysuggest swapping out your entire Dana 35 axle assembly for a Dana 44 out of another TJ or a Ford 8.8. Google these and you'll find a ton of information on these common swaps.

4140 is the alloy and hardness. I changed to that because the stock axles are made of a weaker material and are know to fail. To learn a lot about the Dana 35 I just used google and read and read. The spider gears are the small gears inside the carrier. They are know to break also. You can eliminate them by swapping them out for a lunchbox type locker, Switching the stock carrier out to a true track limited slip or full case locker. Lots of guys don't recommend a locker in the 35 without 30 spline axles. So I say research like I did and sort through the all the bs and do what you are comfortable with.

dylan1991 That's good to hear. There are a few things in your post that i don't know what they are. I know next to nothing about axles. So are the alloy 4140 axles a complete new axle or is that a kit to put in the D35?

Is it possible to get rid of to get rid of the spider gears without changing the axle or is that just part of a D35?

Thomas302 I can tell you my experience. My jeep has the 30/35 combo on 33's. Po lifted it almost new so its been like that a long time. I have been wheeling the crap out of it for almost 3 years with the lsd in the rear. It is now locked with USA alloy 4140 axles and I am doing harder trails and lines with no worries. I don't bounce or drive like a retard. Don't let the Dana 35 scare you away from finding a group of buddies and going wheeling. Probably 90% of all wranglers have Dana 35's(not exact but close) and even tho some have problems millions don't. However If you want piece of mind then I suggest getting rid of the spider gears and stock axles. Those are the two weakest areas.

Tire and axle questions

I've been reading through the forum like crazy today tring to find some answers, but I've found nothing definitive.

I'm going to lift my 2006 TJ with a 4" suspension lift. I want to go with 33" tires and I've been looking at Dick Cepek Crushers and their Mud Country tires. I've also been looking at Goodyear Duratracs and MTR's. I'm really leaning towards the Mud Country or the MTR's right now. How can I tell if a tire is uni-directional? The Goodyear MTR's look like they have to be but what about the Dick Cepek Mud Country tires?

My other concern is my axles. I have a D30 in the front and a D35 in the rear. Once I get my Jeep lifted and some tires on it, i want to find a club to go hit some trails with it. How big of risk do I have of breaking the axles with 33" tires? Also would I be better off with a smaller tire size like 31"?

I'm still a total noob to Jeeps, so I'm trying to get a feel for how everything works and the risks involved with certain upgrades without doing other upgrades.
