|Mike Cawein||I have the same problem now, Jeep is fine untill about 50 to 55 mph before or after that it is fine but if the wobble catches before i can get through it i have to come to a compleat stop for it to quit and then its fine again. i replaced my stabilizer shock and that didnt realy help but it was shot. I just tightend up the steering box adjustment and that took most of it away but now the steering seems to tight, very sensitive. my tire on the driver side is starting to wear funny with the high and low tread spots, is it possable that this problem could be the steering box? Ive noticed this happens to alot of the 04 wranglers as mine is too.|

Agree with Jerry, you have a tire problem.
Ours had what looked like nearly new Wranglers on it when we bought it.
Rotated/balanced the tires as I was seeing a little bit of chopping on the fronts.
Went from no problem to a terrible shimmy at 55. Could drive up to it and through it.
Started looking closer and first off saw the tires were built in 04, and I could see some dry rot between the treads. Jacked the jeep up and spun the tires to find the two now on the front were not round. 1/4" in difference as they spun.
So in trying to fix a problem I ended up creating one.
New BFG Mud Trackers took care of it.

|TJWenatchee||I had a wobble on my old 77 Dodge power wagon with a 6" lift. Faster I went the worse it got. Had all four wheels balanced. No change. Thats when I learned I needed to clean the INSIDE of the wheels after spending time in the mud. (Why the guys balencing the tires didn't notice I don't know) It was about 2 inches think and like concrete on the wheels. Someone from Montana who was used to the problem tipped me off. My wife and I spent hours chiseling out the caked on mud from the back of the wheels. There was no more shimmy.|

I had a death wobble for almost 2 years. I replaced TRE, shocks, obviously balanced and rotated many times, replaced the tires, track bar and front rotors. I took me so long to figure this out that my steering box started to leak and eventually leak to a point i would put an emtpy laundry container with kitty litter in it under it. As it turns out, i replaced my engine mounts and GONE no more death wobble. For me it occured around 60-65 mph. I write this to let you know the one thing i learned is that in a jeep MANY things can cause a death wobble.

|Jerry Bransford||A speed-sensitive wobble, oscillation, steering wheel shimmy is 99.999% of the time nothing more than a wheel that isn't spinning true. Usually a tire that isn't perfectly balanced or perhaps a bent wheel which is far more common if you are running steel wheels. But usually it's nothing more than the tires just need a more carefully performed balancing. Many tire jocks only balance tires to what they consider "good enough" which for a TJ, isn't good enough unless it is perfect. And the bigger the tire, the more "perfect" becomes the operative word where tire balance is concerned.|

I too had a similar problem. First I changed the steering stabilizer ( minor improvement). Next I changed the track bar ( one bushing was worn out, better improvement). Finally, I checked the ball joints. Driver side upper joint was bad. Replaced it. ( fixed it!).
Start with the cheapest fix and work your way up. Checking parts is free.

Going from the stock Wrangler tire to some Michelin solved my wobble at 55mph.

|radar||I had the same problem with my tj around 55 mph had the stock tires rebalanced had 26,000 miles on them still had the problem but not as bad. Got a new set of bfg's /at and no more shimmy|

There are u-joints on the front axle shafts but they'd have to be really bad to cause something that feels like a shimmy.
As said above, most shimmy is caused by either an out of balance tire or a bad tire.

Bad U joints causing the steering to shake??? That's a new one. I always figured bad U joints would cause driveline vibration instead. Always learning something new on WF.

|val||thanks, I'm going to try the rebalane and elignment again this weekend. All tires are sstock size. I have replaced tires twice during this hold thing. I've been told to have the tires aligned straight.|

^^^ x2 on tires... At least, check 'em first before spending to much money. Rotate 'em and see if the wobble changes feel. You can also take it to a good tire shop and ask them if they can check your tires to see if any of them are "chopped". Thats when the tread starts to wear in a cross pattern, everytime the tire comes around to the "chopped" tread area it will shake the vehicle slightly. Its not easy to notice just by looking at the tires but a good tire mechanic should be able to run his hand around your tires and tell you if there are any chopped areas that would cause it to shake.
This is a very, very common problem with tires that often gets overlooked. People spend hundreds on new parts and mods that arn't needed... But, its hard to find a good mechanic that will actually troubleshoot rather than being a certified parts replacer.

Mine did it at 65 MPH, would shake like hell. I could blow through it and all would be fine at 75-80 MPH. I never could get it to quit no matter what I changed. I didn't worry about it to much cause how often do I go 65-70 MPH except on the interstate?
Anyway, when I changed tires, problem went away completely. I went from SuperSwampers to something more road friendly and my ride is like night and day. Better gas mileage, more power, great handling. no shaking.
Not suggesting you go out and buy new tires, but you may want to keep it in mind when you need to buy new ones.

|val||I have an 05 wrangler 108,000 miles. Whole jeep would shake, replaced front shocks, have had new tires, rotations, front end elignments, had the rear drive shaft rebalanced, and replaced rims. I have the shake all in the front now. What to do next?|

A shimmy is usually never anything more serious than bad tire balance. It doesn't matter if the tires were recently balanced, the tire jocks seldom take enough time to get them perfect as they need to be on a TJ. I normally have to take mine back twice to have my tires balanced to eliminate a similar shimmy, they rarely get them balanced well enough the first time.
One thing that never (!) causes a shimmy is a defective steering stabilizer.

|Atthehop||I had it bad and found a TSB to replace the steering stablizer with an updated version. It made no difference. I ordered a new track bar and then realized I did not see the grease fitting on the joint so I started to grease it more often and not it is almost gone. I only had 50K on my 04 when it started and now it has 65K. Check and see if you have a worn track bar joint or loose mount at the other end.|

Recommend Monroe steering stabilizer
All that helped, bur Currie front lower control arms eliminated my problems
